There's quite a bit of organisation involved in getting old people to get in your way too.

2010-01-06 01:19:15 AM
The only people I see complaining about this are those who run red lights (which there are many).

I've been driving in Vegas for 20 years. We have traffic cameras, sensors, and human observers via video cams. I've never had a red light ticket. You know why? Because I don't run red lights.

Is it that farking hard to figure out? If you don't want a ticket, don't run the light.

Everyone who get's caught doing that had thought just a few seconds ago that they could make it through the yellow light.

They were wrong.

2010-01-06 01:37:07 AM
there's a red light camera at an intersection close to where I work that will flash at a green light, flash if no ones crossing, flash for no apparent reason other than it likes taking pics of you at the wheel.

//pervy red light camera

Not only does it turn red as you get there, it holds the green on the other lanes for a good half-minute, even though there's no traffic at all... until some poor schlob drives up along the intersecting road, and the light changes to nail him.

I'm sorry, but I suspect traffic engineers are screwing with us.

Three weeks ago I received 5 tickets that I apparently earned while sitting at a stop light for 60 seconds while it was red. My 'crime' failing to stop at a red light.

The funny thing is that the angle of the shot visible shows that my vehicle didn't move an inch during the 60 seconds and to make it even better it shows I was at least 4 feet away from the 'stop' line painted on the road.

I thought about being nice and taking it to the courthouse and showing them the 'duh!' Instead I called a friend of mine who's a lawyer, he's bored so we're going to have some fun in traffic court. We're not asking for money from anyone, we just want the charges dropped, but we're not above wasting tax payers money for some idle entertainment (GM did it.)

Red light cameras FAIL! The one two blocks from my house has issued over 1500 tickets in 3 days since it was turned on. I was tagged sitting at a stop light in another county, but unsurprisingly the company that provides the equipment to both counties is the same.

This should be entertaining.

The only flaw I can see in your plan: you do nothing to dissuade the company from shangheing other people with their scheme. Make it costly for them to do this, and they'll stop.

Other then that, I hope you keep us posted... Get a local paper reporter to come with you to the hearing, and get your story told. Then link it here.

That's the very type of thinking that has ushered in and will continue to sustain this police state we're living in-- the old "If you're not doing anything wrong" mentality. These traffic laws don't keep you any safer. People will still run red lights, people will still speed, and people will still die in car accidents. All these cameras do is make it easier for the stinking government to suck more money away from otherwise honest folks. Is it so hard to deal with red light accidents on an individual basis? Oh wait, that would benefit regular Joes and the government wouldn't get their cut. I mean, why does the government or anyone else deserve money from someone if that someone hasn't hurt anyone or damaged property? Revenue-based law enforcement is just another form of tyranny and thievery on the part of government, and here folks who have nothing to gain from it are clamoring for it. Unbelievable.

Or we'll just contact his lawyer and see about creating a class action, either way the cameras here are both against state law and falsely tagging many people. Either way it's just part of the fun of living in Florida.

Just print off a mask of this guy's face and wear it while driving. These newfangled hightech traffic cameras will recognize your "face" and get you to the gym in under 26 minutes.

I'll put it down to plain old incompetence.

I'm about to head out the door to work, when next to nobody is on the road. If I see one car in my first five miles it'll be a lot. And as I pass the region's main shopping mall, at least one light will turn red...even though every single store in the mall is closed at this hour. In my 13 months at this job, I have yet to see a single vehicle at any of the cross-intersections. Me and the handful of other drivers heading to work sit there with wtf? looks on our faces as we wait, and wait, and wait...

The DOT, unsurprisingly, has not responded to my queries. Farking New York.

Well, yeah. Gotta have a license to carry a gun, gotta get a permit to gather or demonstrate, there are more reasons why they can search you than can't, etc...

All of these things are allowed to persist because the populace is too divided to do anything about it. They've been duped into supporting this two-party system, which keeps half the people mad at the other half all the time instead of focusing their ire and scutiny on government as a whole.

You may not know that loops of wire under the pavement at many intersections already note the passing of every car.

...and there used to be a time when the signals took into account that you were the ONLY FRIGGING CAR IN A 10 MILE RADIUS so you didn't sit in the left turn lane for a half an hour waiting for a green. But no, let's just have every intersection go through a 5 minute cycle and add a light at every single housing development entrance.

You've got three types of traffic signals. Timed, actuated and computer system controlled.

Timed signals are just that; they keep the green light on for a certain length of time for your road, then the other road gets the green for a length of time, then it repeats. Traffic doesn't matter, nothing does, it's on a timer.

Actuated means the signal has a minimum amount of time set for each approach leg; if a vehicle triggers the actuator (metal loop in the pavement), the signal checks if the minimum amount of time has run on the other road, and if it has, it switches the green to your road.

Computer controlled are the systems designed so that if you travel the speed limit down a road, in theory you should reach each signal as it turns green. Since you almost never can reach the speed limit in urban areas, though, that's why I said "in theory", and you get caught by a light changing to red. Actuators are at these intersections too but they send their data to the computer, which is monitoring traffic volumes and constantly revises how much "green time" each side gets depending on traffic levels. If traffic is heavy the computer gives more "green time" to that route at the expense of the other road, down to a minimum amount the other road may get.

Which in reality means that a hundred cars come to a dead stop so that one old lady can make a left turn out of the craft store with her yarn.

Seriously, screw this throwing-up of traffic signals every time there's a new curb cut for anything bigger than a deli. Left turns are what farks roads nine ways from Sunday, and New Jersey, of all places, got it right, on Route 17. They ditched the turn signals ages ago. Wanna make a left turn? Too farking bad. Go up to the next exit and do a U-turn thingy there.

Bendal: You've got three types of traffic signals.

Pretty much. I program the software that derives the fixed time plans in Britain. Most of the devil is in how you input the data to the program in the first place.
