The way to do Dune right would be for HBO to produce it as a mini-series with about 100x the budget SciFi had for theirs.

I didn't see Taken, so I don't know anything about this guy. He was the cinematographer on the first Transporter movie, but the to do Dune "right" doesn't mean making the battles bigger or better, but the political intrigue and peculiar culture more vivid.

Well it's set in Europe and the kidnappers go after mostly American travelers and the blunt truth is that white girls are more in demand so there really wasn't any other way to do it.

Morel is one of Luc Besson's corral of directors. He has been a cinematographer for several of Besson's projects, and he knows how to shoot tight, on budget, and is firmly in the camp of Besson's new breed of French Action Movie Director. Very much hands on, very involved, and he knows how to shoot action scenes, and on the hop. The crazy ass parkour scenes in District 13? Thank Morel's camera work. Great guy to have to frame a shot, and to plan a shot. He is very much in the Besson school for building stories with emotional content, as opposed to just explosions.

He may have a chance to do this fairly well. I'd rather see Dune done as an HBO series--because I think that the execs there would do it right, but if Morel is involved, that would mean that Besson would be a consultant in fact, if not actually titled for the film, and that is chock full of WIN in my book.

You missed out. It was very well done. Built the film from relationships, and maybe it's the fact that I'm a father, but building the relationships up made the whole thing sing. Famke Jansen played the perfect ex-wife, with a great deal of nuance. Liam Neeson was introduced as a father first, and a retired spy later. It was one of my favorite films of last year, period. Action or otherwise. Mind you, I liked Red Belt for the same layering of characters with action.

Taken wasn't just a thug with guns, and this is very much in the same Luc Besson written vein of Leon or Wasabi of surprising depth of emotion in what are essentially action films. Morel is very much one of his proteges and I think that the approach worked very well in this case.

I think this is about right too. But it takes a very special touch.

How many Hobbit flicks were fired off in one format or another and LOTR got the closest to creating a real feel for the stories.

I don't really expect this to go any better than Lynch really.

When you look at DUNE as a David Lynch movie (even the Alan Smithee recut), it
comes out much better than when you try to think of it as an adapation of
the novel.

But, really: the world needs this like it needs another collective hole in
our heads. Escpecially since it means that Herbert's idiot pimping children
will get money from it.

I want to see God Emperor as a movie just because the giant hybrid worm squashing people would be amusing.

the original lynch dune (not the recut "alan smithee" version) is actually a pretty great movie. and it boasts some of the best production design in any movie ever. the sets and costumes are incredible.
