Can't we just watch the Saldana footage without the CGI overlay?

Aint a single bristle of fur on Pandora.

Asa Phelps: Aint a single bristle of fur on Pandora.

I noticed that also. I wonder if that was done with some sort of scientific explanation in mind, or if it was a choice to make the CGI easier.

I actually was surprised that the Na'vi didn't sync up during that scene, I thought it was a shortcoming because I expected that. I didn't realize it actually had something to do with getting a PG-13 rating.

It was probably to show off. Really authentic looking skin is much harder to render than really authentic looking fur.

After Saldana explained the USB cable in their tails, I immediately figured the eventual PG-13 sex scene between Jake and her would feature the two of them linking their tails together, surprised when it didn't happen. Knew it'd be in the deleted scenes, lol. Guess you can't put anything past the MPAA, whether it's "motions" or "suggestive usage of magical tails" or whatever.

I'm annoyed by this movie and I haven't even seen it yet.

Actually, I'd say it's the other way around. That's why so many CG characters are bald or have very short hair. Animating hair or fur takes up loads of processing power, since it has to render each individual hair.

2010-01-04 05:52:26 PM
Why?

2010-01-04 05:52:46 PM
So they would be link their tails or whatever and feel each other having sex?

2010-01-04 05:54:13 PM
Thanks James, you just gave furries their own movie!

I want this.

Jake: "Aw, come on, Neytiri... I'm gettin' blue balls here."
Neytiri: "...how can you tell?"

Dark Mortainius: Animating hair or fur takes up loads of processing power, since it has to render each individual hair.

That's true, but for a very long time they had a real problem with rendering skin in a way that didn't look waxy or otherwise artificial. Take a look at Up: Dug's fur looks pretty damn real with matting and everything else, while Carl and Russel still have a cartoonish, almost porcelain quality to their skintones.

Disagree with the disagreement. Sure, fur is harder to render, but it's much easier to make it look real. Slapping fur on a character obscures the muscle movements, skin puckering, etc. that happens with movement. It can convincingly hide rigging errors and plastic skin texture.

Skin on its own is much harder. First is the texture: companies have a hard time getting the spec map right, so it's very easy to make it look too shiny or too dull. Then there's the fact that you can see tendon and muscle movements through it. A lot of games, movies, etc. look cartoony because people just inflate the muscles all the time (like in a comic book), but muscles actually work in opposing pairs. The skin stretches over these volumes. Fat jiggles. etc. We're hard-wired to know how these things work even if we don't actively notice them.

The Hulk was a movie that tried to push the muscle movement to a new level. LotR tried to do the same. Avatar pushed it even further.

If they'd covered the creatures with hair, those subtle movements would have been lost.

seems 3Dmax now has a hair plugin

http://www.maxbasics.com/modeling-tutorials/concepts/hair-and-fur

Back when i took a class on that, and was considering that sort of thing, hair needed a 3rd party app

so that's gotten progressively easier

seems i need to go revisit that sort of thing while i can still get the software easily

So... if Avatar Jake experiences orgasm, does his body back on base need new underwear?

Man, the one included in the movie was already awkward enough. It was like they recreated the 300 sex scene in a PG-13 context through a blue filter and didn't even do the obvious "plug tails together like Demolition Man" thing.

This is the correct reason. Given the number of Na'vi (and overall CGI) in this movie, it's no surprise that there's no fur on them, or that their models aren't overly complicated - it's so the rendering time would be reduced.

Plus, the skin was blue and had glowing dots - so they weren't exactly shooting for "realism".

No, he's paralyzed from the waist down. The nerve signals won't get there...

That's the one thing that I could nitpick about the movie. The Na'vi are aliens... why do they kiss? Why do they cry when they're sad? And how come their emotions are so easily recognizable to us?

Even if there is a plausible reason for them to be humanoid (intelligent creatures who are successful tend to have a somewhat humanoid body plan by necessity, perhaps?) how come they smile and frown like us? Who is to say they wouldn't have different expressions - like our smile looks like we're in pain for them and vice versa? That certainly could make relations with them very difficult in subtle ways.

And having the same sexual organs seems unlikely to me as well. That should be the single most awkward and least romantic sex scene ever as she explains to Jakesully the Pandoran birds & the bees - from the very very basics onward...

Quasar: Man, the one included in the movie was already awkward enough. It was like they recreated the 300 sex scene in a PG-13 context through a blue filter and didn't even do the obvious "plug tails together like Demolition Man" thing.

Heh. I instantly compared the coughing, chair-squeaking and giggling going on in the theater between those two right after I walked out of Avatar.

So let me get this straight... the lil hairplugs they use to attach to animals are also their genitalia? So they were holding onto horses and flying banshees with pubes? I'm gonna go with EWWWWWWWWWW!

Anyone notice what a Mary Sue he was? "Nobody has ever [X] before," or "nobody has [X] in a long time."

"Oh, yeah? Well, I'm Jake Sully, captain of the SS Awesome. Watch me do just that!" No wonder he winds up schtooping her. It's what James Cameron wanted to do, so Jake does it.

James Cameron loves creating strong, independent, fierce, capable female characters... and then having them break all to pieces and submit to some guy.

No wonder he's been married and divorced like 4 times.

Realistic when compared to human skin, I meant. Visually, we tend to be more forgiving of CGI elements that are obviously different from a human counterpart.
