Good riddance.

There are movies, and there is science. The plate tectonics are such that it is impossible for California to "slide off into the ocean".

The article is about a steep scarp-faced cliff in Pacifica that is being eroded; has nothing to do with earthquakes or fault movement. But if the developers and city had followed the rules, a consulting geologist could've warned them about this before it happened.

Have you tried not living on cliff side apartment complex? That could solve the problem for pretty much everybody in this situation.

Great! I'll check out some real estate in Otisburg.

Perhaps building an apartment building on a cliff near a fault line wasn't the best idea in the world after all. Who knew?

InspectorZero: There are movies, and there is science. The plate tectonics are such that it is impossible for California to "slide off into the ocean".

With the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates smashing up against and then sliding below the North American plate, California has about as much chance of actually falling into the ocean as does the Andean Range. Which is to say, give it a couple dozen million years, at least.

Problem is that enough rivers are dammed up to the point that longshore drift has washed away all the beach sand such that cliffs like this one can be undermined relatively quickly.

Sucks to be them. What's beachfront now isn't what will be beachfront a few years from now. Have fun in Otisburg!

Perhaps Mr. Luthor could speed it up.

As someone who lives on the Pacific coast...

These people are idiots, and deserve to lose their homes. I mean, these people usually have more than one other home, so they can lose the money.

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
Until I pay my bill

Ah, Pacifica. At the beach, they have a walk up window at the Taco Bell. You can be sandy and scarf a burrito. That is progress- who cares about an apartment building?

I am currently slidding into the ocean so... aww nevermind...

I don't know, California is still going broke, its just trying to sell off some land to Atlantis.

But it was only 0 deep, so it should be fine, right?

wee: Sucks to be them. What's beachfront now isn't what will be beachfront a few years from now. Have fun in Otisburg!

Though I'm a few hours away, we've seen some pretty severe sand erosion in the last few years, relative to what I'm used to seeing. Based on exposed shipwrecks, it's assumed that the sand level at one local beach hasn't been this low since the 1950s. Surf activity has been pretty high, and I wonder if it's the same a couple hundred miles to the south.

Not that it has to do with California, or that this situation is in any way similar (the beaches of which I'm speaking are near dunes and shallow beach-grass hills, not steeper cliffs), just saying.

Nonsense. It's totally going to happen.
...next time. Or the time after that, but definitely by then. Maybe.

There was a surprising number of houses built on cliffs in California. I wouldn't want one with all the earthquakes they have, but I guess you have to use the land you're given.

I have NO sympathy for these people or people that live in CA altogether.. they cry and complain everytime an earthquake or wildfire happens and when it wipes out their homes they just rebuild right on top of where the old one was.. how stupid is that.. come on, it's like the idiots living in tornado ally, you KNOW it's gonna happen, deal with it or move.. either way, stop bit.. complaining..

When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.

All things considered, that 4th castle IS probably rather stable, what with the rubble of 3 former castles, along with decades of settlement, being utilized as a foundation.

Lets get this strait:

If you live on a cliff, don't get pissy because your house may fall off.

If you build on the beach in a hurricane prone place, don't get pissy when a hurricane wipes it away.

If you build in a flood plane or along a river bank known for flooding don't get pissy when a flood wipes you out.

If you build on land cleared by forest fires every 10-20 years don't get pissy when your home burns down.

If you live in a trailer park in the midwest or lower east coast, expect to get hit by a tornado.

Got it? Put yourself in the way of failure and expect failure.

Did you just advocate going to a Taco Bell in California? That's like going to a Dominos Pizza in Jersey, or PF Chengs in Chinatown.

Or like buying a hooker in any of those cities. Sure, it costs. Sure, it isn't that good. But damnit, it's just EASIER.

From wiki: (new window)
Bodega Head was selected by PG&E for a nuclear power reactor in the 1960s. A large hole was dug, but construction was halted when it was discovered that the site is on a geologic fault. Opponents to the plant called it Hole in the Head, which it is still called today. PG&E sold the land to the state of California for one dollar. The hole is now a freshwater pond that provides habitat for birds.

Happens every year along that stretch of land, from the SF Zoo to Devils Slide. About a decade ago a huge chunk of cliff slid off in Daly City (and I do mean huge, as in 400+' high about 100' wide and 40+ feet deep). It was a good place to sit and watch the ocean. It was also one of only two places that you could access the beach in Daly City (the other one had the same fate but it was repaired.

"Now I'm really worried," said Jenkins. "I'm just standing here shaking."

That's probably not helping...
