Someone mentioned reactor tech that was mothballed that could run off of DU and some other things in a recent thread. If that tech is ever developed, Utah could come out ahead in the long run.

IIRC it's about 40% as radioactive as natural uranium - less, but still the same order of magnitude. As for the historical uses, let's just say that some of the early vendors of radioactive products didn't think their cunning plans all the way through.

The point of Yucca Mountain wasn't to take advantage of anything other than it's extremely remote location. The problem was two-fold:
1. Las Vegas population now negates the existence of a High Level radioactive waste storage facility. NSTB & DHS concerns aside, the political power of Southern Nevada helped push to get the project scuttled. When Yucca Mountain was first proposed in the early 1980's, the Las Vegas Valley as a whole had less than a couple hundred thousand residents. Whereas now it's over 2 million here. North vs. South, it got pushed onto us in the same manner where better sites in even the Appalachian Mountains where there is hard granite underground that would be better candidates than Yucca were all ruled out: The money and constituents were there.

2. Yucca mountain is an extremely remote location. So it's believed that even after our society collapsed, it would remain hidden. They even had designed hybrid blue-leaved yucca plants and joshua trees to plant around it, as well as universal petroglyphs in case all modern languages were dead in order to warn future civilizations to stay out. But as time and geography changes, it is a concern that one day future societies might settle around Yucca Mountain to build cities.

Now that doesn't sound all that bad until you realize that even our toughest non-biodegradable plastics will not outlast the internal wastes' toxic radioactive levels. And while Yucca Mountain is remote, it sits on of both a fault line, as well as a large aquifer that stretches wide and far, and could pollute untold amounts of land once the caskets crack. Plus while we can map things out right now, who knows how geology can change and create larger aquifers and spread the waste even farther?

GurneyHalleck: Wired's article on Liquid Flouride Thorium Reactors was quite interesting. Still not completely green, but it looks a lot safer and cleaner than traditional nuclear reactors. And there's plenty of thorium.

Not necessarily quite as simple as the article implies, but still a promising avenue...Even modern variations of "traditional" reactor designs are pretty good and safe...ideally.

But do you want a nuclear reactor built by the cheapest contractor? We had some "hickups" due to construction screwups (luckily encountered during the construction phase rather than after activation) for our latest nuclear power plant.

Rather than having the government be responsible for approving whether it's ok to build another nuclear power plant, it should be responsible for strictly monitoring the quality of construction of such plants.

Although nuclear power is just an intermediate measure, it's one of the less-bad ones...if done properly.
