Thank you for hammering that point home, subby...

I admire his bravery. Hell, I like him--he can come over to my house and f*ck my sister.

Tonight, you pukes will sleep with your gavels. You will give your gavel a girl's name, because this is the only pussy you people are going to get. Your days of finger-banging ol' Ruth Bader Ginsburg (shudder) through her pretty pink panties are over! You're married to this piece. This weapon of wood and... well, more wood. And you will be faithful!

I don't know about everyone else, but subby made the reference to the Rifleman's Creed... I'm just running with it. 'Cos it's funnier.

Funny, I thought there was no such thing as a 'former' Marine.

Nah, the old veteran farts get all pissy though if you tell them you "used" to be a Marine. I am personally now a real housewife of Virginia Beach, so I could give a rat's patootie. My baby will know every 4 letter word by the time kindy-garten starts, and we can throw one hell of a party, so we're good to go here.

zamboni: I don't know about everyone else, but subby made the reference to the Rifleman's Creed.

I heard about it in "Jarhead", a farking dumb movie. And I thought the movie made it up, because it's a farking dumb creed.

To be fair, I see its point. Being the engineer/techead type I was always anal about details, and it pissed me off to no end seeing my peers treat equipment like crap. You pretty much need to POUND the idea of respecting equipment into the head of the typical teenage boy. The "creed" essentially just emphasizes the importance of the rifle: Respect it, learn it, maintain it, and don't leave without it. Without it, you're basically a civilian in fatigues to the enemy. But the creepy propaganda BS injected into it is superfluous.

Jarhead is the only flick I've seen that shows what a great deal of military service is: Boredom.

You think the creed is dumb but then agree that it is useful. Hmmm...

I just got a funny mental image of the Marines from FMJ running around the city of Hue, banging VCs on the head with gavels, complete with cartoon sound effects.

Yeah, um, I was a personnel clerk for the CG at a large headquarters command, so I never had a rifle, never went to the field or in theater, and don't remember the creed. I didn't like the movie Jarhead, and always get a kick out of hearing "ole crusties" get their panties in a bunch just for the sake of their pride. I worked 12 hour days behind a computer, but loved my job.

Ooh Rah!

Our SJA officers would take half days to go golfing. Nice place to work. Lots of protocol and paperwork though. I would totally do that if I were a judge. Not the Baghdad thing, though. Fark that!

Just dropping in to say that Judge Farr is a stand-up guy. I've known him for a long time and would recommend that any Houston-area Farkers consider giving him a vote.

Also, one word to describe the feeling of clicking a random link and seeing someone you know as the subject: neat!

Judges with combat training?

2wolves: You think the creed is dumb but then agree that it is useful. Hmmm...

Nothing complicated about it; I was just trying to be fair. It fills a need; it impresses on young teenagers to properly use and respect the rifle. SOMETHING needs to fill that need, badly, and the creed does it. Kudos to Maj. Gen. Rupertus for solving that problem. But I daresay it doesn't do a very good job because of all the superfluous brainwashing BS thrown in there diluting its meaning. So don't just eliminate and leave a void; replace it with something simpler and thus far more effective. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) has been the doctrine of general training in the U.S. for some time now; put that in perspective with a four-paragraph creed that just tells recruits (with ten-second attention spans and no respect for tradition, no less) to respect the damn equipment.

What is your major malfunction private dragonchild!

The point of the creed is to help turn a bunch of useless 17 and 18 yearolds into Marines. They need to be brainwashed. So they can be relied upon and to minimize combat lock. You don't want them thinking about following orders, movement, and firing. You want them doing those things instinctually. So beating out their halo playing civvie personalities is important.

As for the rest of you pussies... Jarhead? Thats not a movie. Full Metal Jacket is a movie. Gunny Hartman would be ashamed.

More seriously Judge Hinojosa is good Judge. Hopefully Houston will get a few more family courts, and Farr can move into one of those.

Tradition you say? Ask any boot about USMC history and they will tell you at great length about Marine tradition. Lou Diamond, Jr., Chesty Puller, the McIlhennys of Avery Island, Louisiana, Belleau Wood, and on and on.

As for general training... that is good enough to make a soldier.

The indoctrination works.

No it isn't. No where in that entire flick is anyone sweating. It's Viet-freakin-Nam and no one sweats.

Push-up, hundreds of push-ups can hammer that point home better than any jingoistic Rifleman's creed. Never heard the creed in basic, just in the movie. The hundreds of push-ups... well... lets say I got big triceps ;o)

Some orders need to be questioned Abu Ghraib any one? Fire and movement and other crew/battle drills, yes they are best at the instinct level (see OODA loops).
