Except that it does. I cite google as my source. It repeatedly talks about people getting oscar "nods" in place of nominations, not oscar wins.

Michael Caine Predicts Heath Ledger Will Get an Oscar Nod
"I think Heath will surely get a posthumous nomination for an Academy Award," Michael Caine said Friday at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where the legendary actor was honored in a hand and footprint ceremony.

Oilsands documentary 'Downstream' gets Oscar nod.
An Academy Award nomination is the perfect opportunity to reach a wider audience and to tell the story of a dedicated physician and his concerns for the health of Fort Chipewyan First Nations people.

'Benjamin Button' hooks 13 Oscar nominations
The nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, and to nobody's surprise, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" did well, nabbing 13 nods to lead all films.

I could go on or you could all agree that Fox News is staffed by morons.

Sure, just show us something beyond your own hostile insistence that indicates that "nomination" is the only acceptable definition, not just the most common.

People generally don't talk about oscar wins. They'll just say oscars. Oscar nods always meant nominations to me.

Read my previous post. The only news story... anywhere... ever... that I have ever seen that calls a win a "nod"... is this Faux News article.

I didn't just pick those quotes selectively. They are like the very first 5 results for a google search for "what is an oscar nod". So yeah. I'm right, Fox News is wrong. Imagine that. Fox News doing something dumb.

It is ignorance. That isn't hostile. Ignorance means unaware, uninformed. So it's ignorance.

Try every result... everywhere... EVER... except for this Faux News article. So either they are factually wrong, or they are trying to shoehorn their own usage of the term. Either way, they are dumb and wrong.

That's true, Before the year 1929 it is very unlikely that Oscar nominations were called "nods"

I think that, in general, the quality of green-lit submissions are slipping on Fark. No doubt that the especially witty ones are being hit out of the ballpark, but quantity and good timing does not always equal quality. Will the Mods continue down this complacent path or will they step up their game in 2010? I wish you could read that in Don LaFontain-ish. RIP you raspy-voiced bastard.

2010-01-02 09:37:07 PM
Edit: I meant to say the quality IS slipping.

You've just shot yourself in the foot with this statement. You are basically saying "because you can't prove what you are saying, it must be false." Also known as an Argument from Personal Incredulity Fallacy (new window).

The opinion of this thread is overwhelmingly in favor of the submitter. I believe the burden of proof falls on you to find additional counterexamples.

/Nod means nomination

FTA:"During the "Crazy Heart" premiere at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, Fox Searchlight's president Nancy Utley informed that she and colleague Steve Gilula loved and picked up Scott Cooper's film when it was shown at a film festival"

Wow, a Fox News article suggesting a Fox Searchlight film should receive an Oscar? It's not news, it's an advertisement.

Oh, and put me down in the "a nod is a nomination" column.

OK, as an intense awards-watcher for at least 20 years, a newspaper employee who used to edit the entertainment page of the front section, and someone whose job it is to be familiar with all forms of style and nomenclature, I can assure you that "Oscar nod" means "Oscar nomination," and nothing else.
