FDR wouldn't be happy being depicted in a wheelchair.

FTAIt will be three stories tall, weigh about 25 tons and span 90 feet......This will be a centerpiece in Oakland,

What an eyesore!

I don't even care who is on it, it's going to be a f*cking joke, and they want to add people later.

something like this but bigger and more people

"And whan that he is out of this world went,
Thus seyn men that goon by his monument:
"In hevene moot this kynges soule reste.
This was a worthy kyng, greet was the pees
That men hadde in his tyme. He was the beste"

Why is it offensive?

2010-01-02 04:33:44 PM
FTA: "If I had my way, it would have 300 people. But you've got to start someplace." It sounds to me like this sculpture will not be truly complete unless it includes everyone ever born.

Really this does not sound offensive, just overly broad to the point of being bland and meaningless.

Yeah, what were they thinking?

Why? What did he do?

DaBishop: As am I by Nother "PainLover" Theresa.

I heard she was so humble and focused on helping the poor that she requested no statue ever be made of her unless it was cast from the finest polished bronze and a minimum of double life size

Remember them?

Only if it shoots flame.

I love her work, but this

The first piece of "Remember Them" will be installed this month. It features Maya Angelou

juxtaposed with this

Angelou, along with Bill Clinton and Martin Luther King Jr.'s son, are among the project's ardent supporters.

made me chuckle.

FTFA: "If I had my way, it would have 300 people. But you've got to start someplace."

Me, too. And all 300 of those people would be Abe Vigoda. It would be beautiful.

2010-01-02 04:39:05 PM
jaytkay: Why is it offensive?

Because Malcolm X was ahead of his time, and that rankles people with rebel flag bumper stickers.

2010-01-02 04:40:30 PM
"Remember Them" is in five pieces, including a miniature version of the entire project for blind visitors to feel.

LOL, blind people

I've seen a lot of good sculptures in my day, and this isn't one of them.

Oakland sucks. I bet the first useful purpose this thing will serve is as a bullet shield for the Oakland PD.

Ahead of his time in terms of the position of the establishment.

There's no saying he wasn't right on time. Someone had to break that barrier eventually.

Why is Vigo the Carpathian up there in the upper left?

No statue is complete without an image of Santa Claus. Or Snoopy.

Kumana Wanalaia: jaytkay: Why is it offensive?

Because Malcolm X was ahead of his time, and that rankles people with rebel flag bumper stickers.

He was also a dirty flip-flopper who gained perspective onto his rage and need for separatism before he fell onto his deathbed.

I almost can't believe this:

FTA: Chiodo got the idea after 9/11, he said. Until then, he had created sculptures for Las Vegas casinos, the Oakland Zoo, Fairyland and other commercial enterprises around the country. But after the terrorist attacks, he said, he wanted to do something for peace.

I almost think the whole thing is a joke, giant ugly statue, trying to make controversy (nobody cares) and the he somehow whips out 9/11 as justification for this monstrosity?

I think the whole thing is a troll, I bet he Godwin's the project by the time it's done

2010-01-02 04:50:00 PM
It's cool they put in Ruby Bridges, but they forgot Randy Weaver.

2010-01-02 04:51:12 PM
Put them in the A-team outfits and it be truly the greatest sculpture of all time.

2010-01-02 04:52:13 PM
The only truly great sculpture would be Sarah Palin and Ronald Reagan depicted with three wolves.

2010-01-02 04:52:24 PM
snugglyhugs: I think the whole thing is a troll, I bet he Godwin's the project by the time it's done

He's got Oskar Schindler in there, so he's already half way home to Godwin...

2010-01-02 04:53:04 PM
FTA: "It's a landmark," Leyson said. "It's a singular thing to be depicted in a statue. It's permanent. It means his message really is, as they say, set in stone."........... The monument, to be installed in a park next to the Fox Theater, will be one of the largest bronze sculptures in the United States.

/this is either a giant troll or everyone involved is part of some kind of special education/Down's syndrome "yes I can" type project..

At least the homeless people will have some new people to talk to.

The City of Oakland is broke. Dead broke. So much so, that they sent hoards of meter maids into the "nice" neighborhoods to ticket for minor parking infractions. Crime is rampant. Yes, please erect a statue now that you've fixed everything else.

That statue looks like it belongs in The Thing.

After finding a complete list of the people in the statue Here (new window), I have to ask. . . who exactly is representing white people in this feel-good-everyone-represented piece of 'art'?

Sure there are white guys in there, but they are in there because they did something for another group.

smells_like_meat: Yes, please erect a statue now that you've fixed everything else.

they are saying it will bring in tourists but one has to wonder.

I use to feel the same way about honkies as Malcom

How did Winston Churchill make it on the list? He was an open and notorious English-speaking white man.

Must be a typo. I'm sure they must have meant Ward Churchill instead.

Exactly. Plus, who is representing the rich people in this feel-good-everyone-represented piece of 'art'?

Sure they have rich people in there, but they are in there because they did something for another group.

FTA: The monument is likely to be a popular field trip destination for East Bay schoolchildren,

What a field trip might look like:

(Teacher speaking through bullhorn to all the kids on the bus as they look out the window):

"Hey Kids, you know that 90foot bronze statue you have seen every day of your life? The one that has become to Oakland because of it's sheer massive size and location what the "Statue of Liberty" is to New York, what the Lincoln Memorial is to Washington D.C., and what "Big Ben" is to London?"

(Kids:)

"Yeah"

(Teacher)

"There it is, *points* field trip over"

(Kids)

"This is giving us clinical depression"

(Teacher)

"I hate myself, and I want to die"
