(The New York Times) Cool What movie became the decade's most venerated cult film. Well, if the phrases "Nice marmot," or "You're entering a world of pain," mean anything to you, then have a White Russian on me, Dude   (artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com) divider line 122

To be clear: it may be the cult film most venerated during the course of the last decade, but it was released in 1998, so it is OF the 90's.

robsul82: Lebowski was released in 1998, Smokey. This is not 'Nam, this is compiling lists about films, there are rules.

From Wiki:

The movie was not an immediate commercial success (its budget was about US$15 million, and the film grossed US$17 million in the United States), but it received generally positive reviews from critics. The film, noted for its idiosyncratic characters, surreal dream sequences, unconventional dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack, has become a cult favorite[1] and has been called "the first cult film of the Internet era

I'd have to say that cult status has nothing to do with the decade it was made in but more to do with the decade it dominated in.

Speaking of films whose charms wholly elude me...

I'm being utterly sincere here when I ask if a fan of this film will please explain to me just what appeal this film holds?

And I ask this as someone who really, really likes damn near every other movie in the oeuvre of the Brothers Coen (excepting both "The Ladykillers and "Intolerable Cruelty").

Have you watched it more than once? I found it to improve greatly on second viewing. It really hits its stride around viewing no. 11

Um, I'm aware.

I think release date has to be factored in. We just can't ignore when it came out. Lebowski began to take off in 1999.

It's just a nifty parable about post-Cold War America. It's mythic in scope but still goofy enough to swallow. It's a movie that makes you think.

I know for me it's more about the one-liners and dialogue between some pretty well-developed characters (The Dude, Walter, and Jesus to name just three)

Example:

Jesus Quintana: You ready to be farked, man? I see you rolled your way into the semis. Dios mio, man. Liam and me, we're gonna fark you up.

The Dude: Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Jesus Quintana: Let me tell you something, pendejo. You pull any of your crazy shiat with us, you flash a piece out on the lanes, I'll take it away from you, stick it up your ass and pull the farking trigger 'til it goes "click."

The Dude: Jesus.

Jesus Quintana: You said it, man. Nobody farks with the Jesus.

But I also like the fact that it's essentially a stoner version of The Big Sleep (The Big Lebowksi... The Big Sleep)... a noir movie that still confuses people to this day. I'm pretty sure that the Coen Brothers, who obviously love film noir (Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, The Man Who Wasn't There, etc...) wanted to do their own little spin on the genre.

Plus... I mean... the cast is just gangbusters ... Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Tuturro, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Elliot, etc...

I usually only give films one chance to connect. There are so many films out there that I want to view for the first time that I usually don't revisit them unless they really dig their hooks in the first time.

I gave it my initial viewing about 2 years ago after having it be hyped to the gills. Even keeping in mind that nothing ever meets excessive pre-release hype, the film left me thinking "is that it?" as the credits rolled.

Maybe I should make a exception and give it a second viewing for this.
Maybe being sober when viewing was my undoing?

I had the same feeling. Then in retrospect, I kinda liked it a little. Saw it for a second time and loved it. The ending is very "so what?" So I felt let down. But second time through, loved pretty much the entire thing.

It helps to understand it's not really a movie about anything in particular. It's just a "day in the life of this one dude" sort of thing. Also, drink lots before watching it again. Or smoke some weed, if you're into that sort of thing.

Being in an altered state certainly helps you get into the mood of the movie. This is one of those flicks that if I'm channel surfing and it's on, I'll stop there and watch. Friends have pointed out that I have the movie on DVD and could just watch it that way with no interruptions or editing (though I do love some of the "safe for tv" dubs they have done) but getting up and putting in the DVD would ruin the flow. You know, man?

I like to watch movies around 3 am. Brain is kinda weird then all on it's own and everything is dark and quiet. It was perfect for the first time I saw THX-1138.

Aaargh, Mentat, not the "it makes you THINK" crap. I like the movie just fine. But I'm just sayin' I think about everything whether it's good or bad, whether it's awesome or it blows. I don't find myself selectively burdened by thought.

A good piece of entertainment is ALWAYS entertaining no matter how deep it is. So if I want to watch it again I don't have to do it with my brain switched on.

This movie? I just like the WTF-ness of it all. There are some movies that do it badly, this one was just fun.

Loves good intelligent entertainment but will never turn down a stupid good time, either.

This movie is both. You can turn off your brain and enjoy the witty dialog and absurdity, or you can contemplate the deeper themes. Whatever you're in the mood for.
