FTFA: The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage among a substantial number of adherents of that religion, with some defences permitted.

Atheists find many of the positions advocated by religions to be outrageous. Shouldn't that result in fines for all religious institutions?

Would've been a lot better with some Meslier.

It is Ireland, some things are different in the civilized countries.

Imagine the fines Slayer are gonna rack up when they play a gig there.

Who will judge whether or not a quote is blasphemous? Apparently, in Ireland, the Churches are in charge now?

16 was full of win.

That's hardly a recent development

I'm trying to figure out what the hell Bjork's point is (#13). She does a 180 in the space of a single quote. Then again, it's Bjork.

Marvin, what do you make of all this?

I think it's a good idea, basically, but it needs tweaking. Instead of being called a "blasphemy law," it should be called the "religious asshole law." If you're an asshole about your religion, or about someone else's, you do a LOT of community service for the first offense. Second offense, you pay a moderate fine. Third offense, you have to eat Irish cooking for a year. There is no fourth offense, because you'll be begging to leave Ireland after that year is up.

2010-01-01 01:52:23 AM
Deary me, talk about a whole country taking a step backwards. What happened, Ireland, you used to be cool.

I applaud their balls in directly challenging the law rather than sitting around opining how it's wrong.

"God Hates Us All" is certain to be a hit this time around.

I don't want to start any blasphemous rumors, but I think that God's got a sick sense of humor, and when I die I expect to find him laughing

So can I declare any use of the word "Monday" to be an affront to my god Crom, He Who Sits On The Mountain, or is it just that one religion that we're not allowed to blaspheme?

I have stated in previous religion posts, that I am a practicing Roman Catholic.

I also APPLAUD the person for publishing this.

I truly believe in Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Press. If an Atheist doesn't choose to belive in God, that is his or her choice. If they want to joke about Jesus, God, Buddah, or any other diety, let them.

I joke about my religion all the time.

It has always amazed me the number of atheists who spend so much time and effort trying to convert religious people into believing nothing.

I think it may be a 'if I had a gun to my head I could choose...' sort of thing.

Another good Bjork quote y'all have probably already heard:

I stopped being afraid because I read the truth. And that's, um, the scientifical truth, which is much better. You shouldn't let poets lie to you

Now ALL religions can be equally oppressed - and oppressive - at the same time.

Well done, Ireland. All you need now is an Inquisition to top it off. Asshats.

Great quotes except they have nothing to do with the actual law at hand.

Anybody that believes this law was meant to protest Christianity is kidding themselves. This is part of a much larger, global campaign by Muslims to silence anyone that criticisms fundamentalist Islam or questions the correlation between Muslims and terrorism or violence towards women.

Does this mean the Presbyterians are going to all get fined for pissing off the overly popish Anglicans, not to mention the Catholics?

In terms of celebrity endorsement...Jesus is way cooler than Bjork. Jesus even does better tunes than Bjork..."its oh so quiet" just doesnt stand up alongside "Jerusalem" or even "Away in a manger" for that matter.

Because Ireland is so well-known for its large, influential Muslim population.

Haven't you heard of St. Muhammad's day when everyone wears black and stays sober? I celebrate it by wearing black.

I think, could be wrong though, this law was only introduced to clarify an older law so it couldn't be abused
