I'm in the Interior (of Alaska), and we're still almost 4 hours away from our New Year.

/Parts of the Aleutians and points thataway are beyond the International Date Line, so they're both the Easternmost *and* Westernmost parts of the US, and they are in a far different time zone than the rest of us.

Yay! It was a really quiet New Year in my corner of Fairbanks. Farewell to the worst decade of my life. (being semantic debate on decade).

Alaska and Fairbanks and Anchorage and snowmobiles and tundras. Can I be in this thread now?

At the Fire and Ice festival in Anchorage last night we had hula dancers from Hawaii performing next to a giant paper mache volcano that erupted. Pele brought in the Alaska new year. The temperature was about 10F. I really felt for those Hawaiians dancing with all that skin exposed to the cold. I wish I had a video camera. It would have gone viral on Youtube.
