I didn't realize "Puna Kihapai" meant "Spring Field" in Hawaiian

Amazingly, barely any so far. Due to the drought and ongoing wildfires, the county (I think, or maybe the state?) has requested that personal fireworks be kept to between 9pm and 1am, something I think is a reasonable thing to request every year.

New Year's Eve has become one of my least favorite days of the year since moving out here thanks to the local obsession with fireworks

/most years they're pretty much continuous from about 2pm to about 2AM with sporadic explosions even later. The smoke gets so dense (on top of the constant vog problem) that it's like driving through dense fog and my place fills with smoke even with all the windows and doors shut
//I am not exaggerating

Or as we like to call it...."Kenya".

Hmm...I tried anagramming this one to see if I could get Springfield that way, and all I could come up with was "Jeremy's Iron".

Puna Kihahpai? That just sounds made up. It's not a real American name like Upirngaq Piruqsivik, Alaska.

It's New Year's day. If you won't be asleep at noon there's something wrong with you.

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou to you Hawaii farkers!!

I love how the city just starts to rumble and the noise keeps building and building. Never been anywhere that does New Years the way Hawaii does.

I'm pretty sure the whole island sounded like that from about 6 in the evening. It's been mostly quiet for the past half-hour or so, though.

Oh please, if you think the fireworks were a problem now, you should have seen the place before they started to crack down on illegal fireworks and firecrackers. Driving down the H-1 on the morning of Jan 1st was like driving through the I-5 to Fresno on a winter morning. No see shiat

I still haven't gotten used to the relatively quiet New Years here on the mainland. I mean, what do people do all night if not light firecrackers? Drink?

And you think its bad now? There is still Chinese New Year...

Hau'oli Makahiki Hou from Honolulu!!!

I love how we haven't had a really good rain in forever out here. Today, however, was overcast & rainy all day. I think the rain gods did that on purpose to keep Oahu from going up in flames!

Still a heavy cloud of smoke & vog outside, which isn't going anywhere because we have Kona winds. In other words: One more week until everyone has bronchitis ... again!

Lucky I live Hawaii now and am not ass deep in snow, suckas!!

No kidding! The house filled with smoke by 8pm. The dog glued himself to my leg like I should do something. They were already going so hard that I couldn't actually tell a difference at midnight from the hours before. It wasn't physically possible to increase for THE moment. I swear to this day if the house catches fire the dog won't bother to alert anyone because I was ok when it filling with smoke yrs ago.

I don't have a problem with people having fun with fireworks; I just have a problem being forced to breathe 80% smoke for several hours. We have a constant vog problem where I live because the combination of the trade winds and the mountains trap it, so on the average day it's like living in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

When you add in 12-14 hours of continuous fireworks, mostly the cheap & super-smokey type, it really gets bad and I end up with a headache & stinging eyes & throat, even with every window & door sealed. It's not really very fun. You may think I'm exaggerating, but I've had family visiting from the mainland over New Years before and they couldn't believe how dense the smoke was.

This year we had a nice breeze that kept the air pretty clear, and one of my makai neighbors was actually setting off cool fireworks (you know, the ones that make a colorful display in the sky, as opposed to most of them which make a lot of noise and smoke but aren't that fun to watch).

Had a good time watching the display around midnight.
