I worked at a Subway in college and the manager forgot to lock the doors one night. The next morning the place was trashed. All of the bread was pulled out of the freezer to thaw and the vegetable bags were cut open and dumped on the floor.

Manager was a biatch anyway, so I just laughed when the insurance wouldn't cover it because the store wasn't locked.

Depends on what kind of place you live in, really. Out here there are several stands that open just that way. People leave their stuff out (such as local honey) in a cart by the side of the road with prices marked and an explanation, you leave money and take the stuff. There's also a pasta place that does this, they make pasta but there's also a freezer they sell stuff out of, only you just leave your money in a jar on the counter.

I'm sure there must be some people who abuse this occasionally, but apparently not enough that it pays to have someone out there watching over them.

2009-12-31 04:49:15 AM
I'm stunned stoned so this appears to be a great thing here.

Last sentence of that article:
Safeway is looking into how its locks apparently malfunctioned so they can prevent something like this from happening in the future.
Hell no! Can't have people helping themselves, paying voluntarily.
Whatever you do, don't evaluate the behavior, and design a more efficient supermarket. FSM know research in this area has never proved useful.

Cold1s: Am I an A-hole or Capt. Obvious to suggest this is staged?

It did occur to me too, but it's a risky venture; what if obvious looting DID break out? And you'll probably have low-level employees having to be "in" on it, which is far more risky.

But the benefit was quite high. When's the last time Safeway was IN the news? Much less a heartfelt story? That would beat out any expensive ad campaign many times over.

This just seems like a really backwards attitude. Market research has immeasurably improved your life, often in ways you'd never have thought. Did you know market research created snuggies, the shamWOW, brittany spears, emo, and reality t.v.?

Sure. Right. I can even imagine everyone through a small store on a quiet day being more-or-less honest.

However, everyone correctly totaled their purchases, then paying cash without bothering with change? That would take the direct intervention of a higher power with a host of angels.

No, seriously, I do work at a Safeway, and if this happened here, well, there wouldn't be a Safeway to work at anymore.

ambercat: People leave their stuff out (such as local honey) in a cart by the side of the road with prices marked and an explanation, you leave money and take the stuff.

When I happened by the visitor's center for the Very Large Array west of Socorro, NM, if you wanted to buy postcards or other knick-knacks, they just had a donation box. Other than than the staff that were upstairs running the telescope, there was no one in the visitor center that day.

Why is it supposed to be sweet and noble that these people entered a store that was, although unlocked, obviously not open for business? Just because they supposedly left cash for the items they pillaged?

Wouldn't the correct, less "self-serving" move have been to use one's cell to contact someone who could come lock up the store? Or does that kind of benevolent-yet-reasonable action not make for the desired down-home, feel-good "news" filler?

Yeah sorry I was just lashing out at the perceived slight upon my moniker. My bad. I get this reaction a lot. Some day I'll figure out why. But just for the record, unless otherwise noted in the post, I mean everything I ever say. Well, obvious sarcasm excepted. And snark. And when I'm just kidding. Were you referring to the ones "looting" or the ones that were "finding"? Because apparently there was some sort of difference...I can't remember what that was either.

DWT Samus: Saw this on the local news the other night, I'm in Sacramento and Roseville is one of our suburbs

It's also one of the rich areas of town, so I'm not surprised there was no theft. If this had happened in the southern parts of town, there'd be nothing left of the store

But there would have been a great block party.

Well, from what I saw, people were "finding" food and water, and "looting" clothes, shoes, and electronics.

Maybe it's a connotation/denotation thing. Like, I'd say that guy above "found" some beer. The cops in uniform loading up shopping carts with goods from Wal-Mart were "looting". It's like that.

2009-12-31 05:38:18 AM
A lot of what happens in a situation like this can depend on how it starts. If the first people who go in are honest about it, it puts pressure on others. After all, if there are a number of people shopping and you start stealing, well those shoppers may well call the cops on you or go vigilante. However if the first person takes shiat, well then you don't feel so bad about taking shiat. It's "ok" since they did it and so on.

I've seen the same thing at traffic lights. Came across one that had gone out (no power outage, just a problem with that one light) and traffic was proceeding as normal. People go go for a bit, then that direct would stop, turns would happen, people in the other direction would go and so on. All working very nicely, everyone being polite about it.

It really is amazing how a tone can get set and social pressure will have people sticking with it.

Roseville is rich while Nawlins is pretty poor. The people of Roseville weren't in a dire situation? Roseville is a suburb? Racist jackass.

It was actually two separate stores. I hope none of my brothers/sisters lose their jobs over this...infraction. I checked the doors on my store about 79 times before I left the place unguarded. Talk about nerve racking.
