ooh it's a dodge. I wonder if it has the 225 or the 198?
slant-6 is probably the best damn working engine ever.

NOT IF ITS BLOWED UP

While I like the sarcasm in the headline, a van being in Times Square for 2 days, especially running up to NYE, is pretty damn suspicious.

You have to assume that before the police shut down the roads they asked all local businesses if it belonged to them.

2009-12-30 11:54:59 AM
Well, the A-Team drives a GMC, and the "Free Candy" van is a Ford, so I'm not sure who this is...

Chevy 350 might have an argument, but the betting would be 6-5 pick 'em.

It's probably a production Van.

It looks legit

Barbigazi: It's probably a production Van.

That was my thought, but who would leave one unmarked sitting on the street (unless it was immobile, I suppose)?

Can't the check the plates and call the owner?

ITS ALL BEEN DESTROYED!!

2009-12-30 12:34:19 PM
I've got a birds-eye view of this. Cop cars everywhere, they appear to have evacuated the building across the street on 7th between 41st and 42nd, bomb robot, whole nine yards.

2009-12-30 12:37:57 PM
Is the van white? If it is it's probably just some dude trying to sell a extra set of surround sound speakers.

2009-12-30 12:38:51 PM
the daily news said the van had a fake police parking placard. That makes me think its a production van. They had a whole counterfeit parking placard operation on the production of I am legend.

I was think more along the lines of PA system equipment for tomorrow. The counterfeit placard isn't helping, though.

Gonna be interesting it there's 10s of thousands of $ worth of PA gear in there, but why you'd leave that parked is a mystery.

It has temporary plates and a tarp covering the windows according to CBS.

this could be serious...
bigger than bearmanpig incident.

Perhaps. But 'newsflash' worthy?

I agree with you. It isn't at all.

2009-12-30 12:49:17 PM
The newsflash is in anticipation of the explosion?

2009-12-30 12:49:37 PM
The "suspicious placard" in question probably looks something like this:

2009-12-30 12:49:44 PM
It could be the 4chan party van?

2009-12-30 12:50:35 PM
I'm betting somebody's meth lab is gonna get blowed up by the bomb squad.

(apparently the "FBI: Female Body Inspector" image I had attached was "thrown away" by the system)

It's only been two days. He's probably just waiting for Triple A to send the tow truck.

2009-12-30 12:58:34 PM
MSNBC says it's a street peddler's van.

Dammitsomuch! I read this and my mind instantly translated it into the stupid baby duck with the speech impediment from Wonder Pets.

WTF? Is this american paranoia week?

2009-12-30 01:40:01 PM
First, a remotely operated Bomb Squad robot, equipped with a camera, rolled up to the van, looked at it and rolled away. Then, officers drove a white box truck containing sophisticated x-ray equipment past it. The NYPD box truck drove back and forth several times.

Several police officers have walked up to the van and looked in its windows, and then walked away.

Here comes the Pulitzer.

I read the headline that it was an "ABC News" van already parked in its place (which would make sense to set up a day early) and a clever use of the [News] tag.

2009-12-30 01:42:32 PM
The white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no parking in a white zone.

2009-12-30 01:42:46 PM
Brown Alert!!!

You're in trouble if a bunch of silver guys jump out.

\LEAVE THE BRONX!

I Said: And would rather shut down ALL OF MANHATTAN than give it up!

Having driven around in NYC trying to find parking before, and having spent what I can only imagine are days of my life driving around trying to find parking in Chicago before I gave up and ditched the car seven years ago (or, rather the car ditched me), I would do the same. The whole city can go to hell, but damnit, I'm not moving my car.

skitzo: Is the van white? If it is it's probably just some dude trying to sell a extra set of surround sound speakers.

I must look like I need surround sound, or I look like the most farking gullable person around as I get approached by these guys in shopping mall parking lots all the time.

"dude, I bought a surround sound package and the clerk put two in my trunk! You want to buy one for a great deal?"

thge brand is always the same....it escapes me now...Nova or something.
