Lincoln Southeast High School

On first read, I thought this was the band from Lincoln High School which is in South East San Diego.

I was going to say that Lincoln must have gotten a lot less ghetto after it was demolished and rebuilt.

It took me two more reads to realize that they were talking about another school named Lincoln Southeast High School which is not located in San Diego.

No complaints here, though it's not what I went in for...just better.

That's probably one of the coolest things that could ever happen for a High School band. Very awesome. They also sounded very good as well.

I remember last year I was forced to do the FAU marching band.....We were selected to the Motor City Bowl in Detroit... Praise Obama that they didn't make us go to that crappy game.

Face it, marching bands in colleges do not have the cream of the crop musicians. Most music schools prohibit their serious brass players from being in the marching band because of risks to the emboucher. Marching band is more of a phys ed credit than music and how the band looks is more important than how it sounds. They are, after all, playing in open stadiums - not exactly an acoustical perfect or even desireable venue. Given that, it is possible for a high school marching band to sound as good, to a casual observer, as a college band. They can at least be as loud and that's about what counts. Extremely doubtful, however, that they can look as good if they take the field.

There are few sounds quite as impressive as a 400 piece band, in stand and blow mode, while you get to stand on the Director's podium.

I was at a tournament earlier this year where there were four basketball teams playing. We brought a small pep band (all seniors, probably a 1/3 music majors). All the other teams had high school bands in place of the college pep bands. The other three were giving it a good shot, but several people (not just our fans) told us on the way out that we sounded a heck of a lot better than the others.

And no, you don't need a strong music program for a good sounding band. Granted, this is for a given definition of good- marching band good is different from concert band good. Listen to some of the HBCU bands. The marching is impressive, but almost as important is their brassy, loud, sound quality. Same with the elite drum corps- there is a Cavaliers sound,a Carolina Crown sound, etc. But that's a different kettle of fish.

The feel good story of the season. Good for them.

This, by the way, is a huge crock of shiat. If your music school does this, they are doing you a huge disservice. Music isn't about sitting in a practice room twelve hours a day practicing etudes. It's about performing for an audience. If they are denying you performance time because they are worried you might bruise your lips muscles, it's time to find another school.

Their flight got snowed out on Christmas.

It was a road trip, they were taking buses and the roads were closed/impassable. I doubt many bands fly to road games.

My wife and I (we live in Nebraska) can't understand why the Pride of All Nebraska couldn't be flown out. We have friends who were in the band last time UNL was in the Holiday Bowl, in 1998, and apparently they flew that time. I know they flew to Arizona once. We cannot figure out who would be dumb enough to plan a 44-hour, 1600-mile bus trip for about two hundred people in the middle of winter. I can't even imagine how that would be cheaper than flying.

And the LSE band did fine. As did our Huskers.

I think the high school band should get to play a song at the next Nebraska home game.

Mercenary band gigs are awesome. Did one while in college (Appalachain) for Fairfield University for the NCAA basketball tourney. They overnighted us a bunch of Fairfield t-shirts, faxed a copy of the fight song, and gave us monies for transportation and some cash for dinner. Most of the Fairfield fans didn't even know it wasn't the regular band (except maybe that we sounded a little better than they were used to).

/at FSU, you were in marching band or you weren't in the music program. The violin quartet turned into the bell biatches...and the cello and bass players marched bass drums.
