When the EMTs asked the cops to help them move Lassi from where he was lying on the floor, Lassi says, one of his "arms flailed during his diabetes-induced seizure, striking one of the LaGrange and Brookfield defendants. At no time did Mr. Lassi intentionally strike or offensively touch any of the LaGrange or Brookfield defendants."

Lassi says LaGrange Park Officer Darren Pedota responded by Tasering him 11 times, for nearly a minute, as he lay helpless.

...Jesus.

Tasers are becoming miniature electric chairs for police officers.

Judge, jury and executioner.

Chances that cop is fired or in any way penalized besides mandated paid leave while under investigation:

If you have not done anything wrong then you should not be afraid of randomly being tazed for the sexual excitement of the police officer

This.

It may be naivety, but if it happened here I'd expect the cop to lose their job at the very least.

All these taser news stories make me think that a cop is just "waiting for you to look at him the wrong way." so they can deploy the ultimate little man syndrome device, the almighty taser.

This guy should, at best. be summarily fired and at worst, brought up on felony charges as well as being fired.

All it takes is one bad apple...

Or in a diabetic coma, apparently.

Do cops have a post-incident drug test policy? I'd be interested to see if this "officer" had anything unusual in his bloodstream...

2009-12-29 11:17:26 PM
Well, if the dude had actually picked up his insulin needles instead of just tossing them on the floor, the cop wouldn't have assumed he was a junkie ODing on something.

This is why good housekeeping is very important.

Tazers: the cause and solution to all of a cop's problems.

Still sad that the moment a person becomes a cop they are some type of untouchable, and that the town he works for would rather pay the lawyers to fight the lawsuit tooth and nail instead of negotiating a fair settlement.

2009-12-29 11:18:08 PM
Wouldn't you think the emts would have told him to stop?

2009-12-29 11:18:23 PM
Tasers should have a timer. The cop that uses one unjustifiably gets to have it used on them at a 1 to 1 ratio. Use of lethal force reverts to pre-taser rules. Tasers shouldn't be a tool of lazy cops. You shouldn't get to zap people as an alternative to good police work.

2009-12-29 11:18:33 PM
Taze their asses and see how they like it.

I just can't for the life of me figure out what kind of remiss prosecutor wouldn't charge this guy. Every claim anyone ever makes that this cop uses excessive force will be colored by the fact that he has done this. Frankly, were I a juror in a case where someone resisted, I'd have reasonable doubt as to whether any defendant was resisting arrest by this guy, or just resisting a baseless assault by a thug with a uniform.

2009-12-29 11:20:56 PM
This is the problem dealt with in the California ruling... tasers are not being used as an alternative to firearms or any other kind of weapon, they're being used like toys, simply because cops can get away with it.

2009-12-29 11:20:56 PM
So...why was the cop in this man's home? Was it because his roommate called for medical assistance, the cop was the first person who arrived and fubar-ed the entire event?

I just wonder how long people will tolerate this sort of thing.

I'm not surprised.

My sister-in-law's father was in Chicago on a business trip in the early Sixties. He was diabetic and went into insulin shock. the police were called. They pegged him as a drunk and when he was not responsive to their commands, beat the hell out of him and tossed him in the drunk tank, where he died. Alone.

Ever since then, my sister-in-law has been scared shiatless of cops, especially when she and my brother were living in Chicago, early in their marriage. She was driving home from work in their Triumph Spitfire one Chicago winter when another driver lost control of his car and hit the Triumph, totalling it. My sister-in-law was unhurt, but the car was not driveable. The cops put her in the back of a squad car and drove her to the local station where they called my brother to come get her. By this time, she was just freaking out, crying and just sure they were going to do to her what they did to her father. A bit irrational, but given the family's history, understandable.

She was never so happy as when they moved from Chicago.
