He found the deer when he went into the kitchen to get coffee - it had been shot in the neck, and didn't flee at the sight of Borden.

I'll bet he put a rag on the end of that stick and washed himself later. It's what I would have done.

waterbrother: no hero tag?

Deer was shot and wounded before he got to it with a stick. No challenge, certainly no heroics.

HORATIO (adjusting sunglasses): Sounds like that deer went from menacin' -- to venison.

How is killing a deer in any way "heroic?"

2009-12-29 02:35:22 PM
Not only were there no heroics... This dude literally saw this as an opportunity for free venison steaks.

There wasn't even anything admirable about this, let alone heroic.

Well, at least the animal didn't and die for nothing and go to waste...

Maybe not a hero, but at least humane. He didn't want the wounded animal to suffer.

Beating a wounded creature with a stick, then slitting its throat? Sounds like the Republican response to ObamaCare.

After clubbing the crap outta it, he cuts the throat of the deer. Them country boys always carry a knife in their shorts or what?

not that being clubbed over the head with a stick and having your throat cut is that humane, either.

He told the paper he's a seasoned hunter, so he used a stick to kill it? I thought everyone in Tennessee owned a 30-30. Did he not have his or is he lying cause he's the one that put the bullet in the neck?

I was flipping channels the other day and saw a program where a guy took his 11 year old daughter bow hunting. The absolute joy she showed at killing a deer disturbed me. My brother and his son regularly bag six deer a year.

How someone can kill something as beautiful as that is beyond me.

//not a vegetarian
///knows how meat is processed
////still disturbed about it

Yessur. Actually, it's not so bad here. Got a major city within an easy drive and all kinds of outdoor stuff to do. Plus, it's the first time since I joined that I've lived within a day's drive of a good portion of my family.

Chasing it into the woods and then beating it to death with a stick?

Humane? hardly.

The deer was tainted by another man's bullet. Hunters are sticklers about virginal quarry.

Your post started an office debate about the relative unpleasantness of various types of death. "Clubbed and stabbed to death by an ape" is currently sitting between "drowned by a crocodile" and "stomped by an elephant" in the list of Experiences That Increasingly Suck.

Don't look too deeply. I remember when I was 5 and my dad bagged a pronghorn. He hung it in the garage to dress it. He kept having to stop because my older sister and I would chase each other around it, excited because daddy was happy and brought home something new.

Not only that, if the man had a rifle handy enough to put one bullet in the buck, it'd have been a lot simpler to just finish the ol' boy off with another one.

Beating an animal with a stick is not a humane way of killing it. This guy sounds like a douche and a coward.

Also, if you don't have a rifle within 10 feet of any exterior door then you are not "country".

Can't speak to the specific details but if the deer was shot in a way that it would not die for days, then it is possible to say at least it was a quicker death. Slowly bleeding to death from a poorly placed GSW or dying from the resulting infection seem a more bleak alternative. Perhaps someone who hunts can add some more detail. I thought the quickest way was to grab the antlers and snap the spinal cord. No, I'm not talking about your wedding night.
