I remember back in college when the new Strongbad e-mail was posted on Fark every week. That feels like ages ago.

Sure, Homestar is well past its prime; its creators, the Atlanta-based brother act Matt and Mike Chapman, say the peak came around 2005, just as YouTube and embeddable, user-uploaded video began re-terraforming the media landscape.

AARP? You 14 subby? All the fans I know are in their late twenties.

I kind of like the Strongbad emails.

I now wear dentures and can only move around by way of a walker. There's no way that I can watch Homestar Runner without my bifocals.

I like to think back on the good ol' days and smile... until Matlock starts, anyways.

I actually liked the point-and-click adventure games that TellTale came out with. I think that's because I like pointy-clicky games, though.

Ras-Algethi: I used to play text based mmorpg. My lawn, get off of it.

They're called MUDs (or MUSHes, or...)

Oh, and I used to BBS from a 2400bps modem.

I just got my invite to Happy Acres last week

There's a free PHP/SQL one you can get called "Legend of the Green Dragon," but it's just not the same. When you select an action or item, the page refreshes automatically instead of that nice 2400-baud lag.

I would have guessed mid-thirties at the absolute oldest myself (I suppose I know a lot of immature thirty somethings?). But yeah, a little too soon for most of the HSR audience demographic to join AARP/start thinking about retiring in less than a few decades, especially in today's economy.

FTFA: Remember Homestar, that Flash-animated Web series from those halcyon pre-YouTube days when Web series were the Future, videos stayed put on their sites of origin

Am I the only one who misses this? Seriously, I got better playback quality video from RealPlayer and Qucktime than Youtube has ever given me. I remember when I first saw flash and java based video playback, I experimented with it on my own site, but I still left a download link because those methods sucked so bad. Sure it was convenient for the folks who just didn't have the brains to make a plugin work, but I left different playback links under my videos so you could chose your format. I also missed being able to save the original content in an actual good quality format.

Good flash animation, was to me, a great quality low bandwidth modern approach to video animation - this wasn't flash video which I think sucks, but actual flash animation.

Sure, things are improving. With the latest versions of Flash/Java playback things are starting to look better, that type of video playback is catching up, but I still prefer a real stream. Hulu is causing me to hate embedded virtual machine playback more by the day. My dual 1.7 Ghz CPU and 2 GB of RAM is barely enough to playback Hulu full screen. My old K6 233 didn't have a problem playing back MPEG, AVI, or Quicktime full screen.

I'll admit it, I still like Homestar. Sort of. But in this modern world with Fark and Digg and RSS and StumbleUpon and Amazon.com recommendations, etc., etc., I have everything I read regularly or wish to check out practically handed to me on a silver platter.

I keep up with most web sites via RSS, and unfortunately Homestar Runner doesn't have a feed and of course, is no longer linked to on Fark, so I simply forget to visit.

2009-12-29 07:07:01 AM
I remember an episode of the Screen Savers (oh glory days) where they were giving tips to new broadband users. For those who had never watched videos online, they recommended starting with Homestar.

Agr... buffering 55%.... buffering 95%.... buffering 85%..... eed.

I still hate Quicktime with a burning passion. I refuse to install it on anything. It could give me a hand job and make my wife look like Christina Hendricks and I'd still be like, "GET THE FARK OUT QUICKTIME! JUST GET OUT!!"

Fark Quicktime. Fark it in it's dirty ear.

Quicktime did sort of bother me, it wasn't as smooth as Real Player, and generally I did (and still do) prefer a straight up MPEG stream so I could play it back in the player of my choice - usually the OS default one. Buffering - that was an analog modem thing on those. Remember, that's what you probably used back then? What annoys the hell out of me is we get rid of the analog modems and get some good bandwidth, now buffering is back. I have to pause my Hulu streams occasionally so they'll buffer to max, and certain other embedded websites I have to do the same on. This is one that You Tube usually isn't guilty of. Instead the videos are grainy and crappy, unless I hit the HD button, then it's back to buffering and choppy.

I actually blame that on ISPs not being able to deliver promised bandwidth, except in the case of Hulu which I blame on way to much paranoid encryption.

The best streaming video site on the web for quality embedded content has to be SouthparkStudios.com. It plays back the the way Hulu would if they weren't so paranoid.

Miro is a nice way to go about getting real videos that play back well without the crappy java/flash embedded players. I just wish the program weren't so buggy and had a better/easier way to share content on the local LAN without duplicating it.

I think it's because Homestar is much more like a tv show than a passing meme. It's still funny. People biatch about The Simpsons after 21 years, but it still has it's moments. Unlike The Simpsons, Homestar episodes only have a few a minutes to fill instead of 22, keeping the funny moments compacted. Please don't everyone start biatching and convince these guys to quit. DON'T TAKE AWAY MY HOMESTAR!
