My boyfriend is an engineer at a firm that does a lot of 'green' building design and renovation; my last contract I worked with wind turbines. MechE, EnvE, and EE are your tickets to doing Big Things; to a lesser extent Aeros and CivEs are used as well.

And do your farking research programs, internships and co-ops. It doesn't matter if it's exactly in your field, just do something you think is neat. It shows interest and a zest for your subject matter. No one is hiring fresh out of school engimaneers for this work who don't have something else on their resume to sweeten the deal.

I'm going to guess that the classes at MIT are highly scientific, and the students are learning how to actually design and build power plants, while the students at UC Berkeley are learning how to harangue people on internet forums about "sustainability."

Philosophy majors are the "greenest" of all. They don't even need a pencil and paper to do their work.

Several years ago when I was finishing up my B.A. in Military History, I took a Geography class for non-majors. On a field excursion the professor was discussing the "Environmental Science" degrees a number of larger institutions were offering. Most grad programs and businesses didn't know what to make of them; they preferred to take graduates with "tangible" degrees like Biology and Chemistry. I wonder if a few years of green culture has improved their status?

My major was green because I majored in envy. I have my BA in Coveting with a minor in Unrequited Love.

Colleges and universities are as capitalist as everything else nowadays. They don't care if you turn out to be anything, they just want your money. If you're stupid enough to think there's a future in your fake-a$$ degree, then by all means.

As I understand it there's a ton of very complicated work that is needed out there right now that could be defined as "green". Look at improving existing things like batteries and processors and engines. Then of course there's new technologies that will replace or augment existing things as well like some new kind of tablet thingy that can store any and all info you need and has a way of getting signatures and email, etc which works in furtherance of the goal of a paperless office, school house, etc.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are plenty of majors that could fall under "green" that are more spot on the wall type of things like whinging about buzzwords like "smarter" and "sustainability" without actually having any idea as to how those ideas apply to the real world and don't in any way actually work to achieve or further such things. But to just assume all new work in the field of "green" (dear god do I hate that term so farking much) is as useful as underwater basket weaving seems a bit naive.

I'm a magna cum laude graduate with a technical (heavy math) degree.

Technical degrees are almost completely worthless in the job market and teach you nothing about how to think. Basically they involve a lot of rote memorization.

The best courses i tool were English Lit where you actually had to use your brain to figure out the important lessons great writers were trying to teach you.

Hey, all you engineers that can't find a job, that sounds way more interesting than Computer Programming doesn't it? Hurry now and you may be able to muck up a whole new area with redundant, vague acronyms to convince employers it's really not your fault that none of your shiat works right.
