PPL_Wannabe: Who doesn't have one of those?

Well, considering the content, we all have common ownership of that one... so... no one doesn't have one of those.

I laughed when I saw the balancing pole. Not sure if that was a reaction they'd care for, but the construct is impressive all the same.

I want you to note something.

This monument was built in Richmond, Vancouver.

Where was Obama in April this year? Richmond, Virgina.

Look at the similarity of the names. Especially the V.

All it needs is a sound system with Willie singing "You were always on my mind" with a Russian accent.

Mmmmm Public Art. ALWAYS a good investment.

I'm pretty sure I could give Canada a better deal than 4 mil per stripe. Saw this in the Nat'l Art Gallery across the river from Parliament. Laughed my ass off, got scowls from all the art snobs.

// pretty sure I could do better with a roll of masking tape and two cans of house paint.
/// not exactly da'Vinci, meh...

This is what real art does. It makes people react. You might not like it, but it's getting people to talk about it.

And who cares if it's a waste of taxpayer money, it's in Canada!

Canada is just getting ahead of the curve. They see the writing on the wall with all the socialist crap going on and don't want to be on the bad end when it finally comes to the USA. BHO and his neosocialist are hell bent on transforming America into a socialist workers paradise. Too bad for them because when it finally happens, all the businesses will have moved off shore and the only thing we'll produce here is welfare workers. I guess everyone plowing the fields by hand is what BHO wants for the new USSA.

I was confronted by this thing the other day when I went to the Richmond Rona hardware store (Local equivalent of Home Depot) right across the street. Truly a WTF moment when you're looking to pick up some 2" ABS pipe and instead see a shiny communist leader.

Too bad they took the StreetView pics earlier in the year: http://tinyurl.com/ycags52

Bad investment?

The Gallery bought "Voice of Fire" for 1.76 million. It is considered one of Barnett Newman's most important works, and seminal in contemporary art.

Last year .. during the recession ... a Newman ink on paper 14 x 10 in. sketch .. sold for 1.8 million.

conservative estimates of Voice of Fire these days? 15 - 20 million.

yeah.

Bad investment.

I don't know art, but I know that's idiotic.

bobboberts: "Voice of Fire"

I like it.

One of my favorite installations was in the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art I think. It was just a set of giant colored squares, one on each wall. It really brought the whole room together.

But I wouldn't pay millions for it, certainly.

heyheyjerky: By that standard the goat that se at .cx is one of the greatest works in the past few decades. Also since people complaining about being overcharged for juvenile crap makes something art then there are many overlooked artists in the contracting community. I think whoever is in charge of the "Big Dig" is the next DaVinci.

Man... reading the comments about this sculpture in the local newspaper there, it's unsettling how many people miss the blatantly obvious symbolism of the sculpture. It's mocking communism (or at least Mao), not promoting it. It's as if the people criticizing it haven't actually seen it, but just read the media reports.
