Only been to Houston once. Never rarely have had a need to drive further south than Austin.

With the humidity there I'm surprised anything can even burn.

I'm flying home tomorrow. My layover is in Houston. I'll be stuck there for four hours.

Joy...

Fancy that! What do you make of the differing pronunciations of Iraq? (uh-rock versus eye-rack). Personally I don't know which is right.

The whole "ee-raq" versus "eye-rak" thing pisses me off. It's not like I walk around talking about my trip to "Mehiko". I say farking "Mexico". I don't call "Germany" "Deutcheland" either. It's ridiculous.

I'm an American. I call countries by their names in English when I speak English. The whole thing is nonsense.

I have a really hard time wrapping my head around the fact that Houston is our fourth largest city. It just rubs me the wrong way. I'd accept Dallas, but Houston? I've been there. It just doesn't feel big city.

Phoenix coming in fifth and San An-farking river walk and that's it-tonio at seven also bothers me.

I suppose its a matter of suburban boundaries and what you count as city population...still...Houston?

I don't say "Mehico" simply because "Mexico" is so universal here. "Iraq," however, is all over the place.

And "Deutcheland" is a completely different, Anglicized word, as is "Nippon" to "Japan."

yep; that's the yardstick I use as well. I don't go around calling Korea Joseon or Chosun, but if America's invading Iraq with so many variations on the name it behooves one to pronounce the damn thing correctly.

/are you an eyetalian?
//yes, I'm from eyetaly.

I have lived in the Houston Heights most of my adult life. I like it. If you don't ... that's ok too. Like the article said... we're kinda laid back.

I don't hear too many people pronounce Bangor, Maine right either. My guess is they do it on purpose.
