This happened to us a friend of mine a few months ago. I can't tell if people don't realize or don't care how dangerous it is to flash an aircraft.

Muahaha, I flash airplanes with infrared lasers all the time, and they never catch me!

adding that it was a miracle that no accidents had occurred in either case

Whoever wrote this is not very good at math.

Unless you have the control system to hold the laser onto the pilot's eyeballs for more than a microsecond, it's not going to do squat.

ZM-87 I don't think this needs more than the blink of an eye to permanently blind a man over a mile away.

Had a friend in one of my classes that was big into this stuff. Had a few red ones that would burn black things but not your skin. Really neat info there.

I'm waiting for the day someone REALLY blinds a pilot, the plane crashes in a horrific tangle of bodies and molten metal and burning jet fuel, cars piling up on the interstate, office buildings collapsing...

Wait, I forgot where I was going with this.

At 2,000 ft, the arc of an human eye is less than a 10^-3 degrees. Put that in perspective, at a range of 1 foot being able to hit an area slightly less than a size of the head of a really sharp needle (~0.0002ft) and holding it without shaking.

You MIGHT be able to hit a human eye at that range, I guess, but for all practical purposes that's not going to happen.

That makes sense and all but if it really is impossible why would they bother making a big deal about it? If you can't hit anyone in the eye they would not even know to look out for it.

bullshiat. we've had cheap laser pointers that can blind pilots for years, and they still haven't figured out how to avoid it? also, every time my asshole friends tried to flash a laser on my eyes I was able to avoid it by moving my head a little bit, how can a pilot not do the same, especially if he's like 10km away from the guy pointing the laser?

You gotta remember when this started becoming a big deal, post 9/11. The turrists are gonna laser our planes into the ground, gotta stop them turrists, or they gonna get you.

Illusion of safety is more important to making people happy than actually doing things (which they won't understand) that will make them safe.

Not bullshait . . . the pilot is actually trying to do something, like landing a farking airplane . . . even if they are not "blinded", they might be distracted and getting it a little wrong just might be a lot wrong . . . some of you farkers are so unbelievebaly ignorant, it is amusing.

They understand exactly what can happen. They're hoping it'll blind somebody and cause a crash, otherwise why would they do it? These green lasers aren't something you pick up at Staples.

Perhaps not.

But these guys seemed to think that it was a serious enough problem that they drafted the Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons (Protocol IV to the 1980 Convention), 13 October 1995.

And two helecopter pilots suffered permanent partial blindness after what they and others have concluded was a laser attack, fired at their helicopter.

Might, might, might.

It's wholly unrealistic that's going to happen, even if you set out as your sole purpose of blinding pilots with a laser pointer at O Hare and no one stopped it. Unless you have computer assisted aim and tracking for the laser pointer, you aren't going to realistically hit the human eye. You just aren't.

Does it mean it should be legal to shine laser pointers at plane? No. Is it noteworthy someone did it? Not at all.

One of the things people who get worked up over things like this fail to realize is that life is not safe and it's never going to be safe. On the list of unsafe things likely to kill you, a guy attempting to shine a laser at a plane your are currently riding in is VERY low on that last. The drive to the airport is likely to be more dangerous.

Busting people for doing things like this amounts to feel good politics.

Your point may or may not be valid, but WingNut Daily is about as valid of a source of news as the homeless guy at the local cafe. I suggest you use verifiable sources in the future if you want to be taken seriously

Gargoyle:

I doubt your source on the helicopter pilots.

With a strong enough laser, and a stable enough high tech tracking device, it would indeed be possible to blind a pilot. But anybody with a hand held laser is not going to make it happen.

you realize the beam spreads as distance increases right? physics man, physics. what starts out as a 1/4 inch dot 6 feet away, ends up as a circle 4ft in diameter at one mile, and is still dangerous to eyes, especially if you're playing with something above 5mw. plus, it doesn't take multi-second exposure, so you really don't need to track your "target". wiggle it around (the visibility of the beam will make it easy) and you WILL hit.

I agree that wingnutdaily is a terrible source, but the this should still be a criminal act.

I repeat, some farkers are so unbelievably ignorant it is amusing.

You cannot rationalize doing something so incredibly dangerous as some sort of "fun". I am glad I don't know you. Do you count the fries that go in the bag or weigh it, you obviously don't do anything significant.

Sorry, I don't mean to be mean, but some people do not realize what danger is and end up dead. My only point is DON'T DO IT. The pilot may have a nasty, gusty cross-wind they are constantly adjusting for and the appearance of a green dot on the ceiling of the cockpit is all it takes to distract them, for just a moment, a fateful moment for all of the passengers . . . . DON'T DO IT and don't try to justify it . . . it is so stupid and ignorant.

0.04 degrees. My statement that you would need computer assisted control and aim to achieve it still stands. It's not going to happen with a handheld laser pointer.
