Why yes it has been.

2009-12-26 04:32:50 PM
Wow, a list I cannot argue with.

2009-12-26 05:41:48 PM
BTW, I don't even think that list has enough Chris Nolan. I would put The Prestige on my list of top 30, I think.

2009-12-26 06:28:21 PM
Woo hoo. OBWAT had an awesome extra named consciousNOT.

2009-12-26 06:28:54 PM
I would not have included "The Departed". It's just way too flawed on every level; a plot that falls apart at the slightest scrutiny, and some weird performances, especially by Jack Nicholson.

Its Best Picture trophy should be engraved "Actually for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas, but we had to give it to you for this one."

You'd think film school rejects would have the tenacity to put at more foreign-language films in their top list.

They had a separate list for foreign films:

I hadn't heard of Dear Zachary before this list. I've just been watching it on Netflix - holy crap. So sad and so infuriating.

2009-12-26 07:00:48 PM
For ON Christopher Nolan?

Then why have Spirited Away and Oldboy on the other list?

Weird...

Anyway, I notice this type of foreign exclusion on top book lists too. Doesn't anyone read anything in translation?

Lists are entirely subjetive, but I for one agree with this list save for one glaring exception:

15. Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

That was the weakest of the trilogy, the last 40 minutes was a snore fest of group hugs and faux-endings that left me begging for the movie to just farking end. And when it finally did, I made a beeline for the exit, happy to able to leave. Yes, the LoTR trilogy was great, but this movie on it's own was not. It would have been better to have awarded the #15 spot to the trilogy as a whole.

2009-12-26 07:49:25 PM
I would put in 40-Year Old Virgin instead of Anchorman, but otherwise this is a pretty good list.

2009-12-26 08:13:16 PM
I've still never seen Memento. I really should, but it always escapes me.

No Country for Old Men would be my own top pick. I love everything about it, though

*SPOILERS*

the bad guy winning does seem to confuse some people.

Are you kidding? I loved it. Great story, great acting, good tension, and a surprise ending.

I'm not sure what my pick would actually be. It's probably the LOTR trilogy if I can list them together. That or TDK probably.

Post scrip on this: Nicholson's performance was certainly odd, but the character was meant to be nutty and paranoid. He did great at that and the other actors, especially Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin, were very convincing in their roles.

2009-12-26 08:21:18 PM
Ok here's my totally provisional list for my top 15, though I've just gone over other top 10s to find candidates and am thus probably missing a TON:

Inglourious Basterds
The Bourne Trilogy
The Last King of Scotland
The Prestige
Avatar
Star Trek
District 9
No Country for Old Men
Children of Men
There Will Be Blood
Pan's Labyrinth
Kingdom of Heaven: Directors Cut
The Pianist
The Dark Knight
LOTR

That's 100% provisional, since I'm no doubt forgetting a ton of great ones. But of the ones I did list, that's the order I Would put them in.

2009-12-26 08:22:49 PM
Only movie I've seen on that list is The Dark Knight.

2009-12-26 08:29:42 PM
DamnYankees: I'm not sure what my pick would actually be. It's probably the LOTR trilogy if I can list them together. That or TDK probably.

The whole is certainly greater than the sum of its parts as far as that trilogy is concerned. The individual films are good, but nothing compares to watching them back to back (assuming you've got a full day to totally waste).

DamnYankees: ...The Last King of Scotland...

I really, truly love that movie, but have had a really hard time finding other folks who saw it. I've mentioned it to a few people and they have no idea what I'm talking about.

Pretty brutal though, especially that last half-hour.

2009-12-26 08:30:05 PM
I liked the Gangs of New York far more There Will Be Blood but I think I am probably in the minority.

Oh I've got time baby. And its gotta be the extended editions.

The Last King of Scotland had the strangest effect on me. It was so intense and ended in such a breathtaking way, I literally had no choice but to run home from the theater. I was so amped up and on edge that I left the theater and just sprinted hom. It wasn't even a conscious thing - I just did it.

Brilliant farking movie.

Fark It: I would put in 40-Year Old Virgin instead of Anchorman, but otherwise this is a pretty good list.

Agreed. I'd also lose The Departed, which was a steaming pile of shiat, and add Slumdog Millionaire.

2009-12-26 08:34:59 PM
What, no Phantom Menace?

All kidding aside, that is actually a pretty darn good list.

2009-12-26 08:35:06 PM
I haven't seen all the movies on there, but I agree with the ones on there that I've seen. Pretty good list.

Also The Phantom Menace came out in 1999.

Supertroopers? Almost Famous? Memento? Jesus.

2009-12-26 08:44:24 PM
No The Hangover and Bad(der)Santa? Both were far better than any POS 'comedy' Will Ferrell was ever in.

2009-12-26 08:47:29 PM
Dr.Zom: Supertroopers? Almost Famous? Memento? Jesus.

Supertroopers was great! It was a top-notch degenerate comedy. I can't think of many other movies this decade that made me laugh like ST did.

/Not a movie snob.

Please don't link to the last page.

I've seen:
28 Days Later
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Super Troopers
Brick
The Departed
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
Up (just watched today)
Children of Men
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Anchorman
Almost Famous
There Will Be Blood
The Dark Knight

I loved every one of them. So maybe I should watch the others on the list because I will love them as well?

Just like with the Academy Awards, RotK generally represents the entire series. That's why only it won the oscars, instead of dominating the awards season for three straight years.

Fixed.

I did that running out of the cinema all the way home thing for Rocky III.

Anchorman?

Is this the top movies of the decade as chosen by frat boys?

2009-12-26 08:54:02 PM
Okay, I fail. I didn't look at the rest. The other movies on the list I've seen aside from The Dark Knight are: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and District 9.

Is it any harder to click on pages 1 and 2 after starting with 3, as opposed to going 1, 2, and 3? Rhetorical. Of course it isn't.

I liked it, but I don't think I'd put it in my top 30. I actually think Gangs of New York is his best this decade.

There are very few movies that make me laugh every. single. time I see them.

Super Troopers is one of them.

(Van Helsing is another, but for entirely different reasons.)

Compared to the original, Infernal Affairs, you'll realise just how shiat it is.

I love Scorsese, but getting an Oscar for The Departed is nothing but a sympathy gesture. And Wahlberg for best supporting actor? I don't think so. Jack being crazy Jack is getting annoying these days. He's better than that.

I probably liked it more being from Long Island.. between that and the Marty Tankleff case, the LI justice system in the 80s was so f*cked up.

It sounds very good. Anyone seen it? Recommended?

I've seen it. It's a goddam kick to the side of the head. It's a BRUTAL movie. I would only recommend it if you are stout of heart and just interested in seeing a well made documentary. It's not what I would call "enjoyable" like Man on Wire was.

as a former frat boy and someone who saw the whole list.....wtf are you talking about?

As a side note, list like these and critics in general view Return of the King as the whole trilogy, because thats easier then having to give awards to all three.

2009-12-26 09:18:30 PM
netflix would be much more cool if it had urls that let you automatically add movies to your queue.

(And if their streaming had about 20x more movies.)

2009-12-26 09:20:00 PM
I've been loving Eternal Sunshine showing up so high on so many lists after it was so ignored by awards that year (come on, admit it; Kate Winslet should have won her Oscar for that instead of The Reader). It certainly would be way high on my list for the decade, if not at the top.

2009-12-26 09:21:44 PM
I like this list quite a bit, but Wall-E is the only animated movie that should have made it.

Big fish and Memento, in my opinion, are overrated.

And seriously, Anchorman is not that funny. Enough.
