Videos like this make me think the liberal middle class (me) should think again about the NRA and shotguns.

What does that mean? That the guy flying the drone should be allowed to arm it to fire back?

Didn't read the Terminator reference in the previous sentence, did you? Just to spell it out: he wants something better than fireworks to shoot at SKYNET's hunter-killer drones.

I muted it and played the Star Wars theme for when the 4 Tie Fighters were strafing the Millenium Falcon.

Very cool, subby.

at times, rather than looking like the drone was being shot at, it looked more like the drone was doing its best impression of a Spectre firing its artillery at ground objectives

What the military does for $2 million, you can do for $1 thousand or less.

Well, except for the extended range, increase payload, high performance sensors, satellite link, and potentially weapons.

Now that was cool. Bonus points for the PTZ camera (or was it only PT or P?) and good video editing.

Dinobot: Well, at least it doesn't feel like a giant kick to the balls when your thousand dollar project gets its video feed hacked by a 26 dollar piece of software

The video feed on your $1,000 plane isn't a super-duper military proprietary video feed that a defense contractor hacked together in order to run up the cost, rather than using off-the-shelf stuff. Your $1,000 plane DOES have an off-the-shelf camera, which means you can encrypt it with another $26 piece of software.

Although as long as the current and next generation of military drones are doomed to broadcast in the clear, for fun we ought to send out a few drones over Pakistan that are broadcasting this video.

Came here to say this. Awesome video, awesome piece of equipment. I like how they mentioned using the manned versions to provide air cover for the strike package. Made me laugh since Ive seen a documentary on the Military Channel in which a military officer working on our drone projects plain said they were working on air to air combat programs for the drones.

How much of a nightmare would that be to face? An opponent that has none of the maneuver/G force restrictions of a human piloted aircraft. They have said the drones like the Sabre Warrior would have maneuverability comparable to a small air to air missile.

I have the same kind of RC plane... I really wish I knew how they set up the camera on the plane because I've wanted to do something like that.

2009-12-26 08:41:29 PM
What the kids needed to do was load up a Pringle's can with a gross of short sticked bottle rockets and patch the fuses together with candle wax. light the first one as the plane's coming in! Two or three PringleLoads and they'd be hitting the plane with ease! It might even look like the Katyusha's from the Great Patriotic War!

Golly, not too bad of a video considering all the issues eletric rc planes have. Uhhmmm, obviously the pilot is not a member of the AMA, or else they would not have been aiming for people when flying, on the oftchance the plane was struck, could have easily lost Relative Control of the plane. It looks a tad beat up already, foam at its best is a controlled crash in flight.

At least I understand why it was $60 a year last I legally flew to be a member of the AMA. You can bet if the plane hit one of the people that there would be a claim made against the 2.5 million dollor policy all AMA members have.

I love it. Beats flying combat chasing streamers like I used to do when I was an active flyer. Now have 2 garages full of some 100+ planes in various states of flight readyness and 8 years since took to the air. I prefer running .45's with a 2 foot long tune pipe running a 11x6 prop. Sounds meaner than the whirring sound of a cobalt 5 motor and gearbox.

In answer to another persons question about rigging the camera, can mount it in a pod and control the pod using the flaps knob if you have a higher end transmitter. Helps to have wireless feed on the camera so you can watch in real-time what the camera sees. Might have to use two transmitters, one for the pilot and one for the camera operator so you dont have 3+ hands on the single transmitter, might make for eradict control from the pilot otherwise.

2009-12-26 08:57:25 PM
When I was younger a group of us tried to make an RC plane out of wood (structure) and painted stryofoam (air surfaces).
Long story short 3 months of work was lost in under 3 minutes after getting it airborne and then it became unresponsive and went over the tree line.

No idea where it ended up.

The lesson here would be test out the transmitter range BEFORE sending the damn thing up.

Would have loved to try and shoot it down with fireworks, that thing was flammable as all hell.

Could the camera record to flash memory also?
It would have better video quality.

Head on over to Link (new window)and go to the UAV discussion group for the video feed discussion, and the parkflyer group for info on the easystar and so forth. The aerial photography group is great too Most of this stuff nowadays is almost ready t ofly out of the box, and you can do it for a few hundred bucks, if you're resourceful. You can even get scale predator model if you're so inclined. I believe GWS (grand wing servo)makes one. Just google it. They're all made of EPP foam, which unlike styrofoam, won't "explode" when you hit something.

Cheers.

Ah, that reminds me of a time when I went to see a model rocketry/RC plane field day demonstration thingy.

A guy flying a RC glider wouldn't clear the area so the rocketeers could set up and go ... so they started the show, anyway. Inevitably (and humorously), this bigassed rocket took out the glider in a flash. I still remember his screams of rage as the pieces fluttered back down to Earth.

Good times. I don't think I've laughed that hard since.

Would I be demonstrating too much wussiness to say that my dog once chased an RC place for so long that he could hardly stand? It was excellent and the guy flying the plane seemed to enjoy it too. I will say I was glad my dog didn't try to kill the plane when it landed...he only touched it with his nose. I would not have enjoyed buying the guy a new plane.

Actually, I was hoping for more of that text to MOVE. It looks like that module can handle more input than it was showing. Compass heading, GPS, airspeed, etc. I'd love to see all that in operation, but doubt he'd let 'em shoot at it with all that gear installed.

Not a big deal and years and years before 9/11. A friend and I got together some fireworks including skyrockets that are legal in some counties, but not in ours, and I built a timer, and he put the thing on top of a (very concrete) building all set to go off during graduation. Oddly, some little kid found the thing, an "adult" pulled it from the roof and put it in his office, and then he called the bomb squad....

Several of the teachers um, immediately knew who was responsible. We got lots of threats from the cops of being charged, but if you have a pretty close to A average, they still let you go to Disneyland and then drop it later on.

Perhaps the best part is that I went to a nerd college, where I found my bomb squad during graduation story WAS NOT UNIQUE.

It's now been forgotten in time....
