don't these people have anything else to do?

missmarsha: don't these people have anything else to do?

There is a certain type of people that believe that by writing regulations, they can change the fundamental nature of the universe. we call these people 'insane' and generally speaking we put them into therapy. However, some communties prefer to have them where everyone can keep an eye on them, and elect them to public office instead.

The fact that they exist is provocation enough for our corgi/cattle dog mix.

I'm sorry, officer, my dog was responding to malicious squirreling.

The same people that think you can tell dogs not to chase squirrels are the same people that think telling kids to abstain from sex works.

FTA: "she hoped common sense would guide how the bylaw gets enforced."

FAIL

I don't care what country you're in, common sense never applies to the enforcement of laws. Laws are enforced to the letter unless they inconvenience someone in power (or with money).

These morons forget that dogs do what they want, and as owners you can and do train them. But that is all it is, training. You can't take all the dog out of a dogs life. Heck the squirrels in my house are as safe as any others. My dog loves to chase them, but he doesn't have a chance.

So, once convicted, how does the dog pay the fine or do the time? As a matter of fact how do they read and understand the law?

I suppose it's now up to the dog owner to make it impossible for their unprovoked dog to attack any backyard wildlife. Perhaps a 3 foot chain or cement boots would do the job.

Small town politics. the joke's on you.

I find it amazing how certain people will go so far out of their way to demonstrate how completely inept they are at life itself. What? If we just speak plain and slow English our dogs will understand what not to do? Why does it seem that when school boards and local governments get together the cumulative average room IQ drops into the negative?

2009-12-26 03:56:07 PM
Oh good lord - like a squirrel is in any danger from my dog! He actually managed to trap one last year. The squirrel played dead, and the dog kept nosing it, wanting to play (like it was a cat). We worried at first when we got a kitten that our dog would think it was a hissy squirrel with a big fluffy tail, but apparently squirrels are fun cats, with lots of play value, but a bit less hissy.

/What a stupid bylaw.

There is a poll on that article asking if you support these by-laws. 37% voted yes. In other news: Apparently stupidity spreads via news reports of idiotic politicians at a rate of 37% of the population.

That's so funny. Obviously, you are supposed to explain it to your dog. I'd love to see that conversation.

"Rover, buddy, here are the things you have to do to stay out of prison. You know what happens to dogs in prison, don't you? Can you say buttsex? Say it boy, say it! Buttsex!"

Our dogs think of them as Red-headed Tree Devils. Squirrels deliberately perch on low branches then stare and growl to taunt the dogs. It's more entertaining than anything on cable. We've eaten some squirrel back in he day- by the time you take the head & tail off, there isn't much left. They do make a fine gravy, though.

I purpose to you, any disease a rat could spread, a squirrel could equally carry. Yet I assume you don't share the same animosity with squirrels that you do with rats, do you?

Yet, they are both rodents, are they not? They even rather look alike, don't they, except for the tail?

I always thought that it was a benefit to having a dog that he'd chase and kill vermin.

The best at it was the beagle. He went blind in his old age and still managed to catch and kill birds.

Coun. Ann Kershaw said the clause "without provocation" was key, and I am an idiot that she hoped common sense would guide how the bylaw gets enforced...

Good stuff.
That's how I judge an authentic Cajun cookbook. If there isn't a recipe for squirrel, I don't have a place for it.

If the city has a leash law, then your dog should either be on its leash or in a secure yard.

If your dog is on a leash, it can't chase squirrels...very far.

If your dog is in its yard, a squirrel coming in the yard is provocation, so the dog can chase it.

2009-12-26 08:05:57 PM
That is without doubt the stupidest thing I have seen in a long time. The only thing stupider is the idiots who elected these dolts in the first place. They deserve to have this kind of law on the books.

When you think about it......so do we.
Perhaps it's time we exercised the option.MilesTeg: Odd how adding a furry tail makes a rat somehow cute to some people.

The part about being too afraid of humans to enter their dwellings and shiat in their food as a general rule is another thing the squirrels have going for them.
There are sound, survival based reasons for man's revulsion of the rat and the mouse - and reasons that revulsion doesn't extend to most of the rest of the Rodentia.
