Really? Insipid at worst. The Star Wars Holiday Special didn't even make the top ten?

I have a feeling that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians only missed #1 because of obscurity.

St_Francis_P: I have a feeling that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians only missed #1 because of obscurity.

Primary reason would be that Grinch shiat on a classic short they should never have attempted to turn into a cash cow. Plenty of folks would vote it down simply for that no matter how well made it was...and be right.

I'm thinking they mean released to theaters. That was made for TV, but certainly the worst of them.

I saw that in the theaters back in 2000. Not great to be sure, but not horible either. Ben Affleck's Surviving Christmas was WAY worse.

We saw a sequel the other night to the classic Frosty the Snowman with John Goodman singing ... That gets my vote.

I worked on the FX for Grinch.

Kick, replies, etc.

Hasn't the new Christmas Carol with Carrey come out yet? That looks even spookier than Polar Express.

Glad to see "Deck the Halls" on there. I caught it on FX while waiting for "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" to come on. It was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen, much less worst Christmas movies.

It was amusing seeing Danny Devito going from that sappy POS to playing a deranged, gun-wielding Frank Reynolds.

I was listening to "It's a Wonderful Life" from the other room yesterday, and I have to say that Jimmy Stewart was a ridiculous ham of an actor that sounds like someone is strangling a drunk goose.

In a related story, it's time for Zemeckis to give up on the motion capture animated stuff.

Yes you can. In various "20 public domain movies on 4 discs" DVD sets that I own, I somehow have TWO copies of Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.

This year, is was DVD copies of The Star Wars Holiday Special.

By the way, I think Ron Howard is responsible for that mess.

I guess I got my pop culture crossed - I thought "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" was the Flaming Lips movie.

But of course we all know that the Flaming Lips movie was "What a Way to Go" starring Shirley Maclaine.

But Santa Claus Conquers the Martians was Pia Zadora's debut! Without it, we would never have known about her!

I was watching the MST3K version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Great film. I agree, no Star Wars Holiday Christmas special? Seriously?

That horrible Mexican movie (also done by MST3K), "Santa Claus", is definitely the worst. Just read the plot summary. It might give you a bit of a headache. Santa is actually from space, but he's Mexican, and he's battling the devil, aided by Merlin. Yeah, it sounds hilarious but actually? It's like watching someone else's 1950s Christmas-season bad acid trip.

Here's one paragraph from the Wikipedia article that really had me laughing... my italics.
"On Earth, the three rude boys plot to capture and enslave Santa. Meanwhile, Lupita continues to wish for a doll. (Despite numerous assurances throughout the film that Santa brings presents to "all good children" he actually reinforces the economic status quo; he will deliver numerous presents to the wealthy Billy, while Lupita, despite her exemplary behavior, has never received a present from Santa.) Lupita and her mother say a prayer and Lupita tells that she has wished for two dolls, one of which she will give to Baby Jesus."

I would say "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" is actually one of the best Christmas movies, for two reasons. First, nobody watches it except for in the MST3K version, which is hilarious. Second, the intermission in the MST3K version has the excellent Patrick Swayze Christmas song.

I didn't know she was in that - I only know of her from that anecdote about her abysmal performance as Helen Keller.

That would be quite a sight.

Only reason they picked this was it is currently well known. It was below average, but there are hundreds if not thousands of worse movies.

HOLY SHIAT! I came here to post this and thought it was too obscure even for FARK! This was my dad's favorite movie as a kid and he would watch it with us every year. For years we just called it "Santa vs. The Devil" because we didn't know the name of it.

For the record, the Santa Claus MST3K is better than the Santa Claus vs. the Martians MST3K.

Santa's laughter mocks the poor.

I don't care what anyone says. I loved the original "Grinch" book, movie, and even liked the Carrey/Howard movie.

Compared to this stinking turd of a movie, Carrey's Grinch is farking Casablanca.

While it is far from even comparable to either of the first two, I gotta say that no matter what it is, John Goodman kicks ass.

Santa Claus vs. The Martians is a B-movie made for a few yucks. It's fun to watch in its own way.

I'd rather get punched repeatedly in the balls for 90 minutes than watch that Jim Carrey piece of shiat.

2009-12-25 06:46:38 PM
As bad as "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" is, would anyone here expect a no budget, no stars xmasploitation flick to be more than mildly diverting to anyone over the age of five?

Howard/Carrey's "Grinch"(remember, Ron was still playing "Opie" when the cartoon came out), however, was a big studio, big budget, big director, big star big steaming pile.

That's why it's the worst.

/"Hooray for Santy Claus!"

I actually enjoyed "silent night, deadly night" the sequels, not so much. but come on, what's not to love about santa chopping a kids head off with an axe he pulled out of his sack
