Why is this offensive?

2009-12-24 10:37:13 AM
Because every group doesn't like it when the reason for the stereotypes are showcased.

jchic: Because every group doesn't like it when the reason for the stereotypes are showcased.

it's actually a stereotype of New Yorkers more than Italians. Sopranos does a much better job profiling the Italians in this state: the ones who are connected, the ones who wish they were, and the ones with a self-loathing fascination with all things mafia related.

Those Italians are the way they are and other Italians are the way they are.

What a waste of time

The are blaming NJ for New Yorkers, so they have a point.

I guess they won't call the show 'Italians from Staten Island'...

But we (NJ) didn't have a problem with The Sopranos? Lighten up, Francis...I think the show is awesome. I don't mock them because they're Italian - I mock them because they're so stupid.

I'm of Italian descent and I grew up in the Bronx..although I was never involved in it in any way (and had no desire to do so), you knew who was who. I don't have any self-loathing about the mob..it is what it is. Although the Italians are the best known, nearly every ethnic group has a similar type of gangster, whether it's the triads in Chinatown, or the Irish or the Russians or the Yakuza. In the early days, the Italians, the Irish, and the Jews were all involved, working with or against each other (Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, et al)

THESE douchebags, on the other hand, make me sick.

They don't need to cancel it. One hand grenade. That's all it would take to save the world from those insufferable douches. That or some gasoline. MTV would never film a show in the burn ward. Though I would want them to make an exception in this case.

Sorry Subby, but I put Florida and most of the Bible Belt is in front of New Jersey in the line of states which need to be cancelled.

/Florida counts as Bible Belt, but it has a Fark tag all its own.

Dear New Jersey,

Just eat some ham and drink some water, and you'll be fine. Ham.

New Yorkers?

The hell you say, Farkers.

The quote-unquote guido lifestyle is willingly adopted by a very specific subset of society. Don't you be draggin' my western NY butt down with that.

Link (new window)

6 of the 8 cast members on the show hail from New York while only one is actually from New Jersey. Say what you want but Staten Island is as much responsible for guidos as Jersey is.

Sorry, but any of these so-called Jersey Guidos met a typical East Boston/Revere native, they would end up like Silvio at the end of The Sopranos.

/and Snooki would have a bloody bald scalp and a wired jaw where her nose receded into her face

That's exactly what it is. I hate "Locked in a Room" reality shows (Big Brother, Real World, etc.) But this show....it's like watching a freight train full of bunnies plunging off a cliff. You're horrified, disgusted, but you can't turn away. My roomate feels similarly, but his way of dealing with it is shouting advice and "WTF"s at the TV. I just drink more.

I like the Jersey Shore as it paints a part of the picture in America that you can't find anywhere else. It's America so fark yeah!

Thank you MTV for finding these group of people that are often mocked on the internet thanks to their hilarious pictures.

The disturbing part of the show is that they are spreading and colonizing other beaches. Hopefully they won't find a way to cross the Delaware River/Bay.

Leopold Stotch: The disturbing part of the show is that they are spreading and colonizing other beaches. Hopefully they won't find a way to cross the Delaware River/Bay.

The disturbing part for me is that I don't know who to blame, the guys for being guidos or the women for being attracted to them. I mean, the guys wouldn't do it if it didn't work for them, right?

2009-12-24 05:13:49 PM
i just read the whole woman getting punched in the face by a P.E. teacher clip. she seriously got decked by a middle school teacher who also stole her drink... is that guido code too?

I could swear this thread happened a couple weeks ago with virtually the same headline.

2009-12-24 05:16:21 PM
I don't think I ever actually noticed that spiked-hair, super tanned guido look until whatsisface did it on Growing up Gotti. This leads me to believe that Italian Americans like watching TV shows about Italian Americans, and then model their lifestyle off of what they see on TV. And I guess this is what has the Jersey leaders all up in arms about.

But do people of other ethnicities do this too? Do they ALL do this all the time? This is something I don't get.

I'm of Scottish descent, but if there was a TV show about Scottish people doing who knows what, I wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in watching it. Hell, I'm Canadian, and I wouldn't even watch a show about Canadians, unless it was funny. Come to think of it, I don't think ethnicity has EVER been a selling point when I watch TV. Ever.

I watch shows directed at ethnic audiences all the time, without wondering whether it was meant for me.

But do all people really think that way? Do they go "I'm Italian, and this show has Italians in it, so I gotta watch it and then dress and act like them, because that's how Italians behave."

Do Mexicans do that with Mexican shows? Do Asians do that with Asian shows? Is this problem systemic among everybody who takes pride in their ethnicity, or just the dumb ones?

2009-12-24 05:44:45 PM
The show will run until it is over because the people who complain about it are the ones giving the show more attention than it really needs.

2009-12-24 05:54:39 PM
Guidos, all these Jersey shores are yours except Cape May.
Attempt no landings there.

2009-12-24 05:56:51 PM
All of the many Italian-Americans I know are doctors and lawyers and such. These cafones on the show are the Italo-American equivalant of hillbillies. But hillbillies sell; opera-going professionals don't.

2009-12-24 06:08:56 PM
I always wondered about New Jersey being "The Garden State." Then, it dawned on me... a garden is usually covered with manure and compost.

2009-12-24 06:13:26 PM
As a lifer Jersey person, come on, give me a break. These are just kids who gather at a shore house and have signed away to have their days/nights filmed. They're not devils.

I'm so much more embarrassed that my state lawmakers would even take the time to give a shiat about this show. Don't they have real issues to deal with?? The Douchebag Award goes to NJ State Lawmakers for wasting time and money on this.

2009-12-24 06:17:30 PM
Dear New Jersey Lawmakers,

Lighten up. You can stick your head in the sand all you want. You can deny it all you want. But the douches and douchettes on this TV show is how the rest of the country sees you.

Every place has a stereotype. There is the vapid, shallow SoCal stereotype. There's the biblethumping, racist, redneck, ignorant, inbred Southern stereotype. There is the binge drinking, sausage eating, football lovin', blaze orange wearing Wisconsin stereotype. The difference between the rest of us and you is that we have learned to live with and even find humor in these stereotypes.

You can't fight this, New Jersey. You must learn to embrace it and even laugh at it. Much like the Fark RIP meme, the more you complain, the more people will continue it.

So, New Jersey, learn to love your guidos. Learn to laugh at them like the rest of us do. Learn to profit from them. And you will be much happier as a state.

Love,
msannomalley

Ummm...no. Ive lived in FL for almost 13 years, unfortunately. Anyhow, though there are a fair amount of churches here, its definitely not bible belt. It is many different shades of annoying and stupid, but thats not one of them.

I had never heard of this show until one of my friends started talking about some douchebag that called himself "The Situation."

The show is a trainwreck and I just can't look away; it's just so absurd and hiliarious and sad and awesome.

I can't look away:(

Yeaah..... Spend sometime in NWF and see if you still feel that way. There is more to the state than the central and south parts. Not much but there is some stuff there.

Official Jersey Shore Drinking Game

* Someone uses the word 'guido' or 'guidette'
* If anyone, especially Vinny, fist bumps
* If a guy has no shirt on
* If a girl is wearing a bikini top
* If Pauley talks about, uses hair gel or fixes his hair
* Mike refers to himself as 'The Situation'
* There is a fight (the one at the nightclub in episode 2 would have been a prime example)
* Someone talks about being 'classy' or describes someone else as 'not classy'
* Anyone wears Ed Hardy

One drink of beer per offense (approx 2oz)
Six offenses per beer
If using shots, one per 6 offenses

/Tried it for the first time, only remember the first 25 minutes of the show
//Blacking out is the only way I can deal with this kind of injustice

As someone who lives pretty much exactly where Jersey Shore takes place, let me say it loud and clear: THIS SHOW IS 100 PERCENT ACCURATE.

No, these people aren't from New Jersey, but yes, these ARE the people who invade Seaside Heights every summer. They're why locals don't go there, choosing good local shore towns instead.

Why people are up in arms about a show that is right on target, I do not know. Go to Seaside Heights and you WILL run into many, many people just like this. And no, those of us who live here don't like it, either. But that doesn't make the show inaccurate.

I know that the people in The Hills aren't a decent representation of everyone in California.
But for it's area, it's damn close.

Burn it, burn it all

I'm not surprised there are stupid people on television.
But I am constantly surprised that the people who watch this stereotype-travesty
would emulate the soylent green they see behaving like children on the talking box
