(Telegraph) Scary Man stole so many jars of Marmite that shops began keeping it behind the counter like it was some sort of barf-inducing form of pseudoephedrin banned from 150 stores   (telegraph.co.uk) divider line 54

Why didn't they keep it behind the counter to begin with? Little children might have accidentally eaten it.

What is Marmite? Is it like vegamite?

2009-12-24 09:18:50 AM
I have purchased it from a shop specializing in British food and found it quite tasty, but I like salty strong tasting things. It's sort of like if you took a packet of the powder from beef ramen noodles and mixed it with just enough water to make a paste, from my American point of view.

MidnightMargaritas!: What is Marmite? Is it like vegamite?

Yes, except for its texture. Marmite's a little more molasses-y whereas Vegemite is more Nutella-y.

Oh, I'm not saying I wouldn't eat it. It's just that it looks daunting. I think I'd have a defib handy, just in case.

The ones with the egg in are usually called gala pie...

And yeah, you have a slice. not a wedge. Usually the pastry is made with good wholesome lard.

On-topic, Marmite is farking great, especially in cheese sandwiches. Goats cheese, rocket and marmite is a particularly good combo, but plain old cheddar and marmite works too.

I like a little bit of Marmite spread on toast with some sliced tomatoes.

It costs me $6 for the smallest jar here in Portland. So after brewing my last batch of beer I tried making my own marmite. It turned out more like vegemite, but it is still great on toast with poached eggs.

Mmm. That's my comfort food. I've been known to enjoy a bacon, marmite and ketchup sandwich, but one of these days I'll just cut to the chase and buy a salt lick.

Is it a slow news day?

We were discussing this weeks ago on my forum. The petrol station in question is about 1 mile away from where I live.

And, for the record, Marmite is bloody horrible unless you are eating Twiglets....

well hun, firstly understand that Pervvywanker has likely never eaten vegemite, marmite or been close enough to lady parts to know what any of them taste like....

Secondly he is wrong, the difference is the Autolyzing process that gives vegemite and marmite their yummy taste.

In short, basement dwellers are not the best source of info...

Twiglets are the yummies, those and hobnobs.

It is the Marmite that makes them yummy(twiglets not hobnobs)

MidnightMargaritas!: What is Marmite? Is it like vegamite?

Once beer has been brewed, there is a foul, disgusting residue that used to be fed to the pigs, who, being pigs and knowing no better, ate it reluctantly. Then some entrepeneur (in the worst sense of the word) decided to put it into small bottles (large ones tended to explode, and came under the official heading of "dangerous industrial waste") and sell it as a condiment. British taste buds being what they are, it caught on. The rest, as they say, is history.

Vegemite is pretty similar, only it is made from the residue of boiled sheepskins.

Does the term "dozens" have a different meaning in British English? In American English, 18 can't be described as "dozens."

Maybe it's one of those words like "lift," "biscuit," or "fanny"
