Reminds me of something my friend said one time.

"I don't know whose it was or where it came from but I picked it up and put it in my mouth and I shouldn't have."

GLove88mph: so how many died?

Thats exactly what I was thinking: "Those poor dumb squirrels are gonna get themselves sick or kill themselves"
The article: "Squirrels are ruining Christmas!"

GLove88mph: so how many died?

I would guess all of those who ate the glass and plastic, but festive treat.

They leave the red ones because squirrels are communists. Form the militia!

Wolverines!!!

FTFA: The squirrels normally diet on nuts, seeds and fruits, but even replacing the lights with bigger ones hasn't stemmed their appetite for plastic Christmas bulbs.

Maybe they should try putting out some nuts, seeds and fruits.

Wonder if anyone should tell them squirrels HATE moth balls... hang some in the tree as if they were ornaments and scatter a few around the ground and chances are, the problem would be solved in a single day.

Then they would just be out the bulbs, nuts, seeds, and fruit too.

That makes sense. The blue ones are supposed to good for spine health, right?

I'm from Jersey. Never had a problem with squirrels and lights - and we put out a lot of white ones.

But we also have a LOT of food in the backyard for them - nuts, seeds, bread, food that's gone stale but not moldy.... they love it.

They're fat, they're happy, and they leave our lights alone - give a squirrel the choice between a basket of squishy fruit, nuts and seeds versus a string of plastic and glass lights, and the squirrel will pick the fruit, nuts and seeds. As long as they're not starving, they'll leave the plastic alone.

There's no such town as Fredericton, NJ. Not sure why an Australian news site would even be reporting on this?

H0W13: There's no such town as Fredericton, NJ. Not sure why an Australian news site would even be reporting on this?

There's a link in the article to the original story in a Canadian newspaper about Fredericton, New Brunswick. I don't know how they managed to get that far off.

It should read: "Town continues providing unknowing squirrels with means to commit suicide; puts cute spin on it."

Avoid the red ones, they're not ripe yet.

The red bulbs contain Red Dye #2, which is why squirrels won't eat them or red M&Ms.

Little bastards ate the red ones last time I put lights out. They also ate the white icicle lights.

Good thing I had the lights on a timer, and the lights were off at the time. I'd hate to see a flaming squirrel running from deck to deck, setting a whole row of townhouses on fire.

Someone should photoshop the FARK squirrel with its balls switched out for Xmas lights.

2009-12-24 11:31:14 AM
I wonder if they're actually eating them or just taking them and, you know, squirreling them away.

To be fair there are a large number of guidos here in Freddy Beach so I can understand the confusion.
/not really

I just read the confusion about Fredericton, New Brunswick... but the same logic should still hold water: fat, happy, well-fed squirrels won't chew on christmas lights. Starving squirrels, on the other hand, will.

It's mostly the riff-raff squirrels doing the damage. The bad 80% give the other 20% a bad reputation.

Speaking as someone who gets outa-control with holiday displays, squirrels are actually a real nuisance because they chew on the wires.

Have seen many chewed wires ... but never an electrocuted squirrel nearby ... yet!

2009-12-24 01:57:29 PM
...and then you have those squirrels that try to game the good-hearted amongst us with their scams.
Trying to take advantage of the Christmas spirit...

As he drive out of sight,
"Would you look at that squirrel,".
"His gonads are bright!"

We had a story like this a couple years ago. Incandescent lights are hot and use high voltage. LEDs are cool and don't zap you when you chew the wires.

Hey, QJ..... Have a happy Christmas and see you on Caturday (don't have TF so I'll wait)
