If you lived here, you would find this far from surprising. The rest are probably saying that God will protect them.

It's not optimism, it's fear of losing one's livelihood.

Pyroclastic flow, a mix of hot gases, ash, and rocks that form a dense super heated current can reach speeds greater than 100 mph.

He should rig up a series of ropes in the trees, so he can swing down the mountain like Tarzan, only faster.

Can does not mean will.

I'm guessing it can also move 1 mph, depending on the viscosity of the lava. Unless your special blend isn't lava, and always pours out of a volcano.

He's a betting man.

...When Mt Pinatubo let go in the early 90s, Clark AB was evacuated, but for some reason the security dog team guys were told they couldn't take the dogs with them. So they rustled up all the food and water they could and put the dogs in their base housing units, hoping for the best.
When they got back, the dogs were fine. The...um..slightly chewed remains of the looters who tried to get in, however, not so much. A couple of the houses had some damage to the roofs, and the ex-looters were covered by a couple of days of ash fall - and since Clark wasn't evacuated until the ash had actually started falling, this meant that these nice people were trying to loot the houses while the volcano was erupting in sight of the base. Trust me - with b@lls like that, the folks around the volcano will do just fine.

LarryDan43: Build a lava boat.

Should be easy enough. Just hollow out a rock with a higher melting point but is less dense than lava rock (which is basalt, I think). Certain granites might do the trick.
