I feel really bad for him, he obviously has some issues he needs to sort out. I blame our culture and its obsession with fame. If you're going to be a nobody, why NOT do something crazy that will either make you famous or infamous? In the end, he got what he wanted, but I think he has mental problems so he can't enjoy it.

Just more fodder for his book deal...

Well, if you're going to be in jail for 3 months, might as well be throughout the winter....

Thank God D.A. Lewis, and Jay Leno talked some sense into that judge.

Andrew Lewis told the court, "Mr. Heene wasted a lot of man power and a lot of money in wanting to get himself some publicity," and added that the court should make an example of him.

"I think Jay Leno said it best when he said, 'This is a copycat game.' And people will copycat this event. They need to go to jail so people don't do that," Lewis said.

Anyone who wants to be a reality show contestant (except Amazing Race) should be pro-actively jailed.

The smartest concept in the sentencing was the prohibition against making any money from this escapade for four years. However, I think it should be "for the rest of your and your probably really farked up offspring's lives." I don't think the jail drama would be as convincing as the inability to try to become a reality tv star.

What kind of mental problems does he have? Just because he's an egotistical ass doesn't mean he has 'mental problems'.

I loved the defense attorney trying to compare Heene's BS to the 1938 broadcast of War Of The Worlds.

Four years is probably fine. People will have forgotten about it in that time and thus nobody will give a shiat and want to publish anything.

It's scary as hell to think that we may have to deal with this reality series while putting up with Mrs. Palin at the same farking time! Makes me wanna believe in the 2012 prophecy. dammm

I don't.

I don't feel bad for him at all. He got exactly what he wanted: attention. Not the kind he expected, maybe, and more than he deserves no doubt. For the kids, I have tons of pity.

/I'm famous and I don't get to enjoy it much at all.

2009-12-23 02:08:53 PM
My question: did he have to pay the $42,000 billed by all of the folks mobilized for this friggin' hoax?

I don't care if he does a tiny little spat of jail time. He needs to pay for what he did, not cost taxpayers more money.

2009-12-23 02:10:06 PM
Once in a while, our justice system can kick some righteous ass. They deserved jail time, and they deserved to not garner any profit from it for four years, which means by the time he can, it will have no profitable value whatsoever.

Now, let's hope this dickwad is never, ever heard from again!

he's not rooted in reality. he's rooted in reality television, or thinks he DESERVES some kind of celebrity for being a weirdo. This is what's wrong w/ our country, we're full of self-centered whores who think they deserve to be famous.

"We did it for the show."

Yeah, living a quiet life is a fate worse than death. The U.S. never fails to provide Wonder Bread and TV.

There's no satisfaction for me there - I'm sure Leroy will be happy, but I'd personally like to see taxpayers get their money back from such spurious stunts. Idiots should not be rewarded.

2009-12-23 02:14:54 PM
The Balloon-Boy stunt is a symptom.

They're treating a symptom, and the disease rages on, consumes the human race. The fish rots from the head, as they say. So what I'm thinking is, why not cut off the head?

Force the cancellation of all "Reality" TV!

The dad wasn't crazy, just a farking idiot.
From the Yahoo news (new window) article: "Once the parents were brought in for questioning, Richard Heene feigned sleep during the lie-detector test, claiming it was some sort of diabetic episode."

Faking a coma to beat the polygraph? That's weapons-grade stupid right there.

/Favorite joke I heard during the incident: "A boy up in a balloon? What, did Michael Jackson order takeout?"

RLY?

And that's the best defense they could offer? Who the hell did he have representing him, the lawyer (i.e., the one who usually represents Homer or Bart) from "The Simpsons"?

Not An Alt: I blame our culture and its obsession with fame.

Why not blame the douchebag who used people's fear of seeing a child be harmed to benefit themselves?

Do you have any idea what those cops felt like, seeing that balloon crash, with no kid inside? The prick played on people's emotions because he is too lazy to work for his success like a real man does.

I blame people like you who blame society and let douchebags like this off the hook.

Too light... should have gotten a year. 911 abuse is no joke and they put a lot of lives at risk that day. Yes, I know I'm saying this from the EMT/FF point of view but even if I wasn't I would still think he deserved a heavier sentence. True story: Had someone died in the line of duty, he and his wife would have been charged with manslaughter. Something to think about for all the idiots out there who would ever consider doing something like this.

The Slush: Curious - why does Amazing Race get a pass?

My own two cents, it's a pretty hilarious sendup of the Ugly American stereotype and how it plays out in reality. Plus, the people actually have to use their wits at times.

neonfish07: The mom got 20 days.

So he got 90 days including 60 days of work release, but she only got 20 days? Why did she get a significantly lower sentence? Was she less involved? Or is it because she's a "she", and not a "he"?
