Yes, provided that he doesn't fight crime with a pair of magic singing shoes.

I don't know about this.

I liked The Office, and Extras was fantastically awkward.. but did you see his standup special?

Also, this sounds suspiciously like the idea behind Dr. Katz.

Pilkington is the real star of the podcasts:

"Why didn't evolution make a giraffe good at carpentry so it could build a ladder?"

Also, it must suck knowing you'll never do anything that eclipses David Brent.

The only saving grace is that you're the one who did David Brent.

I think Extras was just as brilliant as the Office.

If you haven't heard his XFM show or the podcasts, you're really missing out on some of the funniest stuff in years. But as said earlier, it should probably be called the Karl Pilkington show because he becomes the reason you keep listening after a while. I still can't figure out whether Karl is the most brilliant comedian in the past fifty years or a shaved monkey with a head like a farking orange.

I think I almost craned by car when I was listening to the podcast and Karl blurts out, "I don't like fun!"

That podcast will brilliant. One of my faves was when they're talking to Steve about his trip to brazil for Carnivale. He's out in the water, gets owned by a wave then finally stands up. People are waving, he can't see too good and thinks they're his friends he's waving at. Nope, they're not and they're waving because he lost his shorts. Then ricky starts laughing about his "John Thomas". I almost pulled over I was laughing so hard.

Head Like A Farking Orange.

Clip of new podcast (new window) Karl talks about Google inside his head.

If anyone has never heard the podcasts or the XFM radio shows, I absolutely urge you to listen to them on youtube, and then try and get the full versions. They are definitely one of the funniest things I've ever heard. What separates them is that it's natural and unscripted - they just prod the monkey and out comes comedy gold.

This approval is my Xmas present to all you Mr. Dilkington virgins. You're welcome.

In the battle of the podcasts, The Bugle is superior to Gervais', IMHO.

The great thing about the Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington podcasts is that they have tremendous replay value. The original series was done years ago, and is just as funny now, after 75+ listens.

This!

I need to find out what the guy who makes that show connection is to the Philadelphia area. The Nick Krol character was wearing a Bucks County t-shirt at one point, which is the bucolic area just out side of Philly, also where I live.

Mmm.. I liked his stand-up, but he really is a one-note actor. He's tolerable in an ensemble cast but I'm not sure what more can be extracted from Gervais-as-lead.

2009-12-23 12:11:56 PM
I really, really wanted to like his stand-up. But I thought it was kind of ... meh.

Maybe I should watch it again to be sure ...

Hmmmmm....

I just did a quick search, and Steve Dildarian (show's creator) grew up in New Jersey. So maybe it was South Jersey and he's a Philly fan.

Count me as a Ricky Gervais fan. I bought both seasons of the British "The Office" on recommendation, having never heard of Gervais, and I absolutely loved it. Extras, absolutely loved it.

The podcasts were great, too, but it was obvious that Pilkington was the essential ingredient. Without his bizarre musings the show would have been boring. But with him there it was fantastic.

I no longer have HBO, but I may have to call my cable company and get that set up.

2009-12-23 12:46:42 PM
CtrlAltDelete: but did you see his standup special?

Yeah... normally, I think of Gervais as comedy gold. I simply did not "get" his stand-up special. It was boring, of all things.

2009-12-23 01:31:06 PM
David Bowie might not think it's such a great idea.

Does anyone know anything about season 2 of Life & Times of Tim? I haven't heard anything about a new season, and last I checked season 1 hadn't even been released on dvd...

I'm so excited to see Karl getting his big break. He's a better comedian than Gervais I'll say that.

That being said, I don't see myself forgiving Gervais and Merchant very soon for CHARGING me to listen to them prattle in the broom closet an hour a week on the podcast.

They did a few years on Xfm. That was free. Then they did 12 podcasts for free. Then they started charging, and not that much. You can get all of it off the internet for free if you are so inclined, but I am not going to begrudge GMP for trying to make a few bob off their product.

Karl doesn't even have a job like the other two.

I have all the podcasts, audio books and radio broadcasts, and I never get tired of listening to them.

It was.

I am beginning to think that Gervais is a one-trick pony.

The Office was ok and so was Extras but he sucked on The Simpsons and 'The Invention of Lying' was just plain bad.

2009-12-23 10:44:39 PM
The Invention Of Lying was indeed a disappointment. I wonder if Ricky's intention was watered down by Hollywood committees?

As much as I love the podcasts, I was hoping this would be some new content and not an animated rehash of the existing material. Ah well.

The President of Hittin' That Ass: The Invention Of Lying was indeed a disappointment. I wonder if Ricky's intention was watered down by Hollywood committees?

Whatever, that movie was farkin hysterical. I'll admit that Gervais wasn't the funniest in it, but Jennifer Garner, Louis CK, and Edward Norton almost had me sharting my pants.
