LMFAO!!! What a bunch of suckers.

2009-12-23 01:08:50 AM
well, that's just dumb.

also, the fireworks company is almost certainly still getting paid... at least a significant chunk, anyway.

i'm just a simple midwestern pyrotechnician and attorney, but wonder what permits the article is talking about. i know california is one of the most restrictive states when it comes to fireworks, but all state permits would be required whether this environmental group complained or not. also, since it's over a navigable waterway, they'd need a coast guard permit, which (IIRC) has to be filed for 180 days prior to a display.

there is, to my knowledge, no agency that would issue a permit saying that a fireworks display is "safe for the environment". sounds to me like a bunch of jerks who hate fun threatened to sue people who want to brighten the city of san diego and make the world a better place, and the lawyers shut it down.

/i hate jerks who hate fun.

Fireworks are for 9 year olds. But, this probably hurts a local company or two. Hopefully the slack is picked up by private entities.

2009-12-23 01:23:13 AM
Fireworks are stupid, whats so interesting about seeing stuff explode in the sky? its juvenile. Its almost as bad as some adults who go all out for Christmas, going overboard with decorations and displays. Grow up for heavens sake.

2009-12-23 01:23:20 AM
You must be a blast at parties, environmentalists.

2009-12-23 01:23:46 AM
How do environmentalists celebrate the New Year?

And you must be an absolute SMASH at parties, Captain Buzzkill.

Hey johm, you're forcing me to ask this:

What constitutes 'fun' in your little world?

2009-12-23 01:29:54 AM
Environmentalists celebrate parties with nosebleeds. I will be sure to make up my own share of the lost CO2. I will investigate ways to increase the carbon footprint of my truck, pet, electronic devices, and burning of coal.

I almost passed on burning of coal this year. This makes me want to burn 5x as much coal. I'll also look for plants to destroy.

2009-12-23 01:30:45 AM
Hmm.. This is as stunning an indictment as I've seen. I'm gonna have to leave my SUV running a few extra hours to make up for it.

/I would have been too drunk to remember the fireworks anyway.

Probably reading thesis' on the bio-metabolic rates of Eukaryote's by a big fireplace and discussing the sociopolitical ramifications of allowing store owners to do some mundane thing.

I miss old school environmentalists... The new generation is insane. Then again, if I had my head wedged so far up my own ass, I might not be able to think straight either. And johm, BAH HUMBUG!

2009-12-23 01:37:41 AM
Come to think of it, I've never met anyone at Burning Man from San Diego.
Hmmmm.

I'm mixing vinegar and baking soda in honor of this thread as I type this.

2009-12-23 01:39:12 AM
Yeah, fireworks are not even fun. I'd much rather stay home and drink wheatgrass juice and download pictures of chicks with hairy armpits.

2009-12-23 01:39:30 AM
These environmentalists are probably afraid that the light and CO2 generated by fireworks would probably interrupt their study of the mating habits of the pole-dancing titmouse.

2009-12-23 01:39:36 AM
Run, johm, run. You've raised the ire of the townfolk and they're lighting the pitch!

Why don't you go sit is a corner and pout for a while Emo-boi.

In a related story. The "Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation" also demanded that the NFL San Diego "Chargers" declare exactly what kind of "charger" they were...car battery or cell phone? For fear of the "environmentalist" the NFL San Diego franchise will re-named its team "Recyclable Waste".

2009-12-23 01:48:40 AM
Id actually side abit with the environmentalist... fireworks are fairly messy. That said..places like disney world are like the $1 offendors..imo they need to cut back hugely.. let their electronic parades and usage of lights be the show.

Good. Good. It's for the common welfare. In fact, just cancel the New year altogether. Calendars rape the planet. And besides, someone may get a paper cut using a calendar. I propose permits for calendars, and only to those who can prove a need.

2009-12-23 01:57:03 AM
Canceling fireworks = holocaust

slippery slope

2009-12-23 02:05:50 AM
In other news, the same thing happened last year, IIRC, the year before, couple of years before that, once or twice five or six years ago, every once in a while last decade or two...

Oh, and anyone who bothered to RTMFA? The "environmental group" has merely threatened to sue, after giving the Port of San Diego 50 days notice to file for permits, which the port had failed to do and which they are required to do for environmental reasons.

So STFU. The Port didn't do what it is supposed to do, and got in trouble for it, just like it has on prior occasions. Dummies.

2009-12-23 02:07:28 AM
ooh ooh! i have my "cool story, bro" story...

i just saw the guy who is suing on the late news here in san diego, and he was actually part of a panel at my law school about the environment and sustainability and he completely came off as really arrogant and he even said, paraphrasing, "my job is basically to sue anyone i can in stopping them from hurting the environment."

well, i guess he wasn't lying.

crap, that wasn't even a 'cool' story. I feel so...inadequate.

Quick, someone buy a bunch of carbon credits. That will make the enviroMENTALists happy and the fire works can go on as planned. Al Gore and the IPCC approves this message.

Getting a permit to launch fireworks for environmental reasons is still stupid as hell.

Might as well replace environmental with "the local government needs more money", it makes a lot more sense and is probably a lot closer to the truth.

Why buy them, when we could probably Photoshop them? They get their make believe "carbon credits" and we all get fireworks. Win win! :)

If they were to strictly adhere to their beliefs, and take them to their logical conclusion, they would kill themselves. And not wait until New Year's to do it.

HEY! Don't be knockin' that! While I don't have a big fireplace, I do read research papers for fun. The universe is a farking interesting place and learning how it works is fun for the curious. And it's certainly a more worthwhile hobby than watching "OW! My Balls!" on TV.

AND I like fireworks. :p

My plan for this evening is to kick back with a few gin&tonics, some chill music, and this paper (PDF warning).

not here.
not in california.
you could crap in a container designed by nasa, have the container whisked away by nasa and immediately blasted out into space and you'd still have to have some sort of environmental impact report or something.

the city, county and state make their money off all of the red-light camera infractions nasa would gather while disposing of your crap.

Either way, it's not like they didn't know about it, or have plenty of time to do it. I mean, sure, it's dumb, but they have had to do it EVERY SINGLE YEAR for like the last 20 at least. There isn't a "We think it's dumb" opt-out.

Some Canadian guy according to Google. It must be someone that Alfred Peachous knew before he assumed the Glenn Beck persona full-time.

I like fireworks displays and I consider myself an environmentalist. Or at least mental. That said, I don't know what kind of chemicals they put in those things. Ma nature sher don't make stuff whut burn that purty.

But I'm all for banning private usage. Nitwits in our neighbourhood shooting them off for a week either side of the day (Guy Fawkes); we'd like to only have to keep the pets inside for one night, thanks.

Next door neighbours shot off a couple of big party packs two years ago, I'm still finding the spent casings in my garden.

Whatever. Just drive down to Monument Rd. and watch the fireworks over Tijuana. I hear they have an awesome display and don't even need permits!
