Well, I grew up in Pennsylvania, where people drive quickly yet courteously and understand obscure concepts like "rules of the road." So I can certainly understand getting all hatchety on your typical Beltway-driving Maryland asshat (after spending the last however long being subject to the same asshattery on the part of all of the other "drivers" with which you are "sharing" the road.) Your average PA driver doesn't understand that "normal driving" involves just aimlessly weaving from lane to lane without using mirrors or signals while yakking on a cell phone and swilling coffee. It confuses and frightens them, just as politeness confuses your average DC-land yuppie. Cultural differences and all that.

I swear, I think the only appropriate vehicle to take on the Beltway is an old International Travelall with a front bumper salvaged from a tow truck. Is there some kind of stupid field enclosing the Beltway that makes drivers lose 20 IQ points as soon as they hit an onramp?

/I've been literally run off the road by other drivers twice in my life; once by a flatbed driver on the DC Beltway and once by a cop on the Baltimore beltway.

Quickly definitely. I'm a slow driver (seldom go more than 9 over the limit), but keep to the right lane unless passing.

A couple years ago a young couple from PA got killed in a road rage incident on 270 going north, racing and weaving with another driver in a green truck, plate unknown. I don't know if the green truck driver was ever caught. Very sad.
