Oooh...coots. Damn, thought we were talking about something interesting here. That'll learn me to reread the title before clicking.

2003-04-02 04:51:51 PM
I'm an old coot. And I can count too.....

2003-04-02 04:51:53 PM
They should put one in a room filled with a million coot eggs.

2003-04-02 04:52:27 PM

"Four eggs.....four eggs, definitely four eggs...yeah....'course there's an egg on the ground...yeah...definitely,definitely an egg on the ground. Gotta sit on the eggs, can't be late".

Don't mind me...the Coots just struck me as Autistic as I was reading the article. Dumb, but able to count and whatnot.

2003-04-02 04:57:05 PM
First they say ther are counting them, then this:

Assistant Professor Lyon said coots can distinguish their own eggs by their colour and speckle pattern

So which is it?

Does anyone remember "The Hinterland Who's Who" on the coot, it was great

I heard that the first band to sign up for this summer's Lollapalooza tour was the Counting Coots. Round here is my favorite song of theirs.

2003-04-02 04:58:58 PM
mmm.. cooter egg.

2003-04-02 04:59:24 PM
These birds really are dumb. In Big Bear, CA, they will sit in the lake until it freezes around them. Then the eagles come down and pluck them out of the ice. Delicious cootsicles.

In other news, still no cure for cancer...

And here is a bushtit

Man, I love bird names

One of my favorite feeder birds:

the Tufted Titmouse

2003-04-02 05:17:30 PM

Boobies!!!!!

2003-04-02 05:18:48 PM

White Breasted Nuthatch

2003-04-02 05:19:27 PM
Thats not suprising at all.

You would have to be really dumb (dumber then bush) to not be able to count eggs. And any bird is smarter then bush. So they should all count.

2003-04-02 05:20:26 PM
"Marge, I swear I didn't touch her. You know how bashful I am I can't even say the word 'titmouse' without giggling like a schoolgirl. Teeeheeheehehehheeeeeee"

2003-04-02 05:22:09 PM
this guy has been mystifying scientists for years. *I know, the joke has been done, but this was still the only thing that came to mind.

2003-04-02 05:23:25 PM
What effects will this have on our understanding of the crow epistemology?

NICU8697: One good Simpsons' quote deserves another...

Skinner: It's already wiped out the dodo, the cuckoo, and the ne-ne, and it has nasty plans for the booby, the titmouse, the Woodcock, and the Titpecker.

Marge: How vulgar!

I hate coots. at the end of a long, lazy summer, when they
show up, it means the summer's done- gonna get cold and
dark and winter's just around the corner. which means
skiing. well, maybe I don't hate'em that much afer all.

now they're mostly gone- nice long warm days aren't far
away...
sometimes they'll get frozen in the ice overnight, which
makes for easy eagle pickin's. bald eagles will land on
the ice and rip'em up. I always wondered why there were
coot parts laying all over the place in the spring, then
I saw one being dined on.
we ate a coot a long time ago- a duck hunter plugged it.
actually it didn't taste that bad with a little salt and
pepper. not really worth the effort though.

2003-04-02 05:58:03 PM
cooties are real??!??!

2003-04-02 06:17:43 PM
I read this headline 4 times and thought it said "coonts"

2003-04-02 10:20:38 PM
They said coot
