Cool indeed.

Anyone have any idea how far away that might be?

Thats a diffrent perspective.

Warning: Some NSFW language in there.

Old video is old. Still slick though.

Three thoughts:

1) That's really, really cool.

2) While I'm sure that plane is further away than it seems, I'm still surprised it was even allowed to get that close to an active launch.

3) The guy who's speaking during the video sounds like he's trying to channel some bizarre blend of Pauly Shore and Ted. Which is to say I wanted to beat him about the head and shoulders after about fifteen seconds.

That boy needs to wash his mouth out with soap.

2009-12-22 06:24:29 PM
Surprised an air martial didn't shoot him for obvious terroristic activities.

Also, should learn to use manual focus.

2009-12-22 06:44:51 PM
I've seen dozens of launches in real life, but never like that. Very nice indeed.

2009-12-22 08:06:53 PM
This is a situation where I would have dubbed one of my crappy songs over the video instead of having everybody hear what a moron I am.

Also, why did the video stop there? It seems like you could stay with it for quite a while.

That was indeed very cool!

The guy was obviously using a Canon camera, with the crappy autofocus there.

People need to shut up when they shoot this kind of stuff. I don't need to hear that it is "so cool" 25 times.

How about 25, "Old News, from 2007"

Pocket Ninja: 2) While I'm sure that plane is further away than it seems, I'm still surprised it was even allowed to get that close to an active launch.

Even if the plane immediately diverted directly for the shuttle the instant it reached the point of no return on the launch, it would never be able to intercept the shuttle. Within moments of launch it is already traveling faster and has reached a higher altitude than the plane.

Cool indeed, except for the nasally whine of the guy shooting the video. There are some people in this world that should have, by all rights, been born mute.

2009-12-22 09:55:37 PM
The shooter wasn't stoned much, was he?

2009-12-22 09:59:15 PM

/eh?

Not your intelectual giaant,

WOW. I've watched dozens of launches live either on TV or webcast, and they always keep that uber zoom tight shot on the shuttle until it's a spec of light. Even though they keep calling out the speed, altitude and distance, you never get a visual perspective of just how much ass that baby is hauling. This video is incredible for that.

2009-12-22 11:43:00 PM
It sure looked like it was going fast.
Did anyone else notice that?
It sure looked fast.

2009-12-22 11:45:27 PM
You know, if space aliens ever see this footage, they'll all be saying 'It's a streetlight!'

I wonder if that made the plane feel inadequate...

It took the plane what? 30 minutes or so to get up to that altitude. The shuttle took 30 seconds.

2009-12-23 12:30:20 AM
Holy smokes... that is sooo annoying...

2009-12-23 12:50:52 AM

While his commentary was..... Crunchy?
He gets an A+ for being able to wield a zoomed in camera without any ShakyCam(tm).

You must have had your sound off. Because when I watch that video, that guys voice makes me want to hurt something.

Anyone thought the video might show something blowing up?

What?!!

/it was going very fast, wasn't it? So cool!

You forgot to spell it as he's pronouncing it:

That is sooooo COOOO-UHL!

Why is it that all of a sudden everyone wants to sound like the morons on "The Hills"?

Yeah that's really the best way to get a grasp on the speed it requires to get into orbit. Even an airplane that gets you across the continent in 8 hours is left looking like it's standing still compared to that kinda speed.

Same reason why everyone wanted to sound like a Valley Girl in the '80s and like a hippie in the early '70s. Don't worry, in a few years it will be something else.

Give him a rest, he was just Canadian. He'd never seeeen a shuttle launch before.

The guy who is speaking has an IQ of about 82.

Maybe, but he is Canadian, so with the exchange rate, that's still pretty good.
