And as we learned on Top Gear, dogs are rear wheel drive. So, give me an SUV any day.

Well, not really. You live in Canada so that's like having a pomeranian and a Chevy Aveo here in the States.

What? Meat?

What dog gets fed raw meat every single day?

Also, 10,000 kilometers a year? That's really low, especially by North American standards.

I think they're counting the grade D meat that gets put into dog food. Which is disingenuous.

Agreed. If anything it should be about 15-20k a year. It seems to me they were fudging numbers just so they could have the sensationalist "zomg dogs r wurs than suvz!" article.

Also, I think that they are basing the meat off of the proteins in kibble product. I don't think many people feed their pets a diet of fresh meat.

Holy crap. My town put a few of those signs up on the bluffs at the beach. It's word for word identical, aside from "North Vancouver" and the phone number. I thought they had been specially made.

Also FTA: while two hamsters equates to a plasma television

I'm pretty impressed that they can manufacture a plasma TV with only an impact equal to two hamsters. I'd also like to support the new "How many hamsters" method of measurement.

Knowing is more important than judging. Satisfying an appetite that has been enlarged by exercise also has an environmental cost, but few would recommend being sedentary for the environment. If a pet ends up being mostly ignored and is a chore to take care of then getting another one might not be such a good idea. Overflowing shelters indicate that pets do not always integrate as well with people as they might.

FTA: Combine the land required to generate its food and a "medium" sized dog has an annual footprint of 0.84 hectares (2.07 acres) -- around twice the 0.41 hectares required by a 4x4 driving 10,000 kilometres (6,200 miles) a year, including energy to build the car.

To confirm the results, the New Scientist magazine asked John Barrett at the Stockholm Environment Institute in York, Britain, to calculate eco-pawprints based on his own data. The results were essentially the same.

"Owning a dog really is quite an extravagance, mainly because of the carbon footprint of meat," Barrett said.

Sounds more like the meat producers are to blame here

No, No, you just need to go kill 18.7 Africans, 7.2 Indians (Dots not Feathers), 6.8 Chinease, 5.4 Mexicans or 4 Americans, English, French, Germans, Spanish, Dutch, or Canadians to make up for your excessive life style.

Especially since they say feeding a cat fish heads is A-OK. I don't think they're putting chicken breasts and sirloin into dog kibble; they get the same stuff that gets turned into sausage otherwise.

Are some people so self-centered and lazy that they can't be bothered to care for another thing, because it's just too much trouble? I bet you're the same guy who'd like to shoot a dog because it peed on your car tire.

Dog ownership has the same ecological footprint as driving an SUV. PETA responds by keying killing dogs and tossing them in a dumpster.

FTFY, subby.

treesloth: Awesome... does this mean we can pit the Sierra Club against PETA and let them kill each other off?

Yes, if PETA weren't already against pet ownership.

So all that spoiled grocery store meat, used deep fryer grease, meat from diseased cattle, leftovers & entrails from the slaughterhouse and roadkill is better for the environment if we let it all rot rather than turn it into dogfood? What am I missing here?

2009-12-22 11:34:26 AM
There is no greater destructive element on the Earth than man.
Most humans are too naive to realize we are just another species, we are absolutely destroying the only resources we have, and we will be killed off like every other species.

People who own larger dogs are terrible to the enviroment and I have been trying for years to have the dog license tax implemented annually at a much increased rate. These "animal-lovers" certainly are selective in their objects of affection, because so many other ones have to die to keep theirs fat and happy.

A bit like Americans... what a coincidence.

There's the error right there. Who drives only 6K miles a year? The warranty and service info is always about "twelve months, twelve thousand miles". The article understates the driving by half, and then says the SUV has half of a dog's pawprint.

Of course, it's interesting even if their footprints are equal.

missmarsha So with my 2 dogs and my 2 SUV's I should be killed?

Good Lord, no! Your dogs shouldn't be killed!

/I keed! I keed!
