"Military officials said there were no exercises in the area at the time of the boom."

That's their story and they're sticking to it, just like they have for decades.

Perhaps this time they are being honest by saying there were no "exercises." My best educated guess at this moment is it was a warning shot to Mothra, who has been known to venture off the California coast. Another possibility, just as likely even, could be it was an engagement with some Mothra larvae. The fact that there was only one boom, suggesting the threat has been neutralized, should actually allow everyone in San Diego to sleep a little easier tonight.

Who believes the disclaimers anymore.. Hell if there IS one, it is obviously a LIE. Love this country. Orwell was right.. NO is Yes.

You'd think the military would have a cover story ready. Instead they say they have no idea what's going on, which gets everyone interested. I'm sure once people triangulate the sound it will be just like last time, and have originated where the military does its training.

How hard is it to say "We detonated some old munitions at sea to dispose of them" regardless of what the cause was. People would say "oh that makes sense" and go about their lives.

But instead we have a "mystery" noise that will have conspiracy nuts going crazy for years, plus all the publicity on the local news about the "mystery noise".

I didn't time the entire episode, but windows were shaking at my place for a good 30 to 40 seconds. I'm about 10 miles south of Miramar and about 4 miles from coranado. with so much ocean to the west and nothing but desert and hicks to the east, not sure why they would choose to go super sonic right near downtown and over SAN airport?

Etc. It sucks to have a plane crash in your neighborhood. The last plane that crashed in my neighborhood was civilian (see my first link), should I harbor an irrational hatred for people that work in the civilian air travel industry? It sucks when planes crash. Blaming the military for a plane crash is like blaming Hitler's mom for WW2. Even if it was pilot error.

2009-12-22 02:51:39 AM
Hmm, area with lots of fault-lines, lots of pressure building up on said faults... So nope! Can't be an earthquake, that explanation would be too simple! No, it's gotta be the eeeeeevil US military trying to hurt everyone around them because as we all know once you join the military you lose all humanity and concern for others!

/sarcasm

Cynics are themselves open to cynicism.

BTW, the best comment FTFA's comment section:

"No, just the echo of Tiger Woods' wife circling the globe and finally hitting San Diego."

Nice.

/Don't worry, cynics! The 9/11 Truthers are backing you up on this!

Last summer, my wife and I were at home in our apartment in a small town outside of Bologna Italy, and there was this earth-shattering "boom" that scared the crap out of us. It set car alarms off. Then, about 15 seconds later, there was another, identical boom. And you could -see- the shock wave as it passed through everything in the house - especially the curtains, and windows.

I talked to people at work the next morning, and the booms were heard at least 20 kilometers in every direction from us, but absolutely no one had any idea what they were - the news channels had nothing, no lightning (it was a clear sunny day)

Because there were two booms I initially thought it must be some sort of double-sonic boom, but there was no other noise (no plane) and they were farther apart than I think they could be for sonic booms.

My best guess was a high altitude meteor or something that didnt show a fireball.

It was very freaky.

I also heard a similar boom in Santa Cruz, Ca about 4-5 years ago at 3AM that instantly woke me up and everyone else from Santa Cruz to as least as far south as Watsonville. But it occured during a heavy, but-thunder-less rainstorm, and I think it was assumed to just have been a single, "mother of all lightning strikes" somewhere off the coast.

But it seat off car alarms everywhere too.
