(BattleSwarm)   Those on the right see ObamaCare as the government takeover of health care. Those on the left see it as a massive giveaway to insurance companies. "Sadly, they're both probably right."   (battleswarmblog.com) divider line 83

I'd rather see a government takeover of controlling the ever-growing cost of health care. The gummint can pay for people's health insurance all it wants. It doesn't mean diddly if the cost keeps going up.

It's shaping up to a be a true compromise: all the loud people are angry about it and the center is pretty "meh".

I do harbor some hope that the influence of the House bill will improve it some, though.

It's a highly flawed but useful starting point. I bet it feels bad being part of the only GOP contingent so weak that it let this travesty of American justice occur.

That's because the government took over healthcare long ago. Who dictates prices of medical procedures that aren't elective? Since medicare came into being, the government.

A lot of these blogs are what it would be like if your town's shiatty local fratboy "punk rock" bands were in the business of publishing their political views instead of getting wasted on a stage in front of ten or so people.

This is evidently one of those blogs.

Wish it were true. Private insurance is charged considerably more for many of the same services medicare recipients use, in part to make up for low payments by medicaid and medicare.

While we are (briefly) on the subject of rational, informed thought, you might find the back and forth between WaPo's Ezra Klein and FDL's Jon Walker resembles that. Link (^)

Ezra really, really wants to paint this bill as a good step forward, and he's joined in this by TNR's Jonathan Cohn: Link (^)

But Walker has his own figures which don't show the bill in such a rosy light. And Cohn wants me to believe that the dems have a shot at "improving the law in subsequent years." Oh! A pony! For meeeee?

It's tough to know just how bad this thing is gonna suck, but it's clearly a remarkably feeble effort to fix health care.

Good point. Look at how many physicians offices refuse medicaid these days due to the low compensation. Guess the docs figure if they are going to make nothing then do nothing.

Wait, I'm on the right, and I think this is going to do a lot of great things to boost health insurance companies' profits.

2009-12-21 09:09:43 PM
The insurance companies win.

Nothing has been done to create competition; the government is simply forcing people to purchase insurance.

The same folks who made big bucks on credit default swaps and stole a trillion tax dollars-- shock!-- get richer with this deal, too.

Our government is completely compromised; Left, Right, Up, Down-- they're all in the pocket of the banks and mega-corporations.

The only way we are going to get it back is if the guilty party overextends so much that even the largest media assault telling us everything is OK! -- go back to watching Dancing With The Stars IX! is ineffective at quelling a violent revolution.

People killing their TVs and commencing to make some heads literally roll is what it will take, it seems to me.

I'm curious to see how these bills are finalized and brought together. Many of you seem to not understand how much can change from here on out, and there are some difficult differences between the House and Senate versions that will force compromise, possibly making for a better bill. I have a hunch some big things are going to be making a reappearance in the bill following the Senate vote.

I wonder what, exactly is in the 500 page document that materialized several days ago, that Reid is being so hush-hush about. It's almost like he's sitting on something huge that will piss off Lieberman or Nelson if he reveals it now, so he's waiting until the filibuster is no longer a threat to bring it up.

Let's stop pretending like we know what's going to happen, as if there is a prize if we're right.

2009-12-21 09:28:38 PM
Its a bad bill from so many perspectives and a good one from so few perspectives. Why the hell are they doing it? Just to say they did something?
We will rue the day this passes.

I used to think that way too, until I realized that if all the "moderates" are in agreement, it means they've found a way to mutually screwing you over.

I like both ends of the fringe: it's the center that's robbing us blind.
