(Seattle Times) Unlikely Mike Holmgren's decision to turn down Seahawks wasn't about the ten million dollars the Cleveland Browns will pay him to GM. It was about responsibility and noble stuff   (seattletimes.nwsource.com) divider line 31

Jesus. It would have to be SOMETHING more than both. Who would CHOOSE to live in Cleveland over Seattle?!?

/come and look at both of our buildings

I just read the article. It only discusses a 10-year, $50 million contract. Where does $10 million come from?

Never been in Cleveland, but Seattle ain't exactly what I'd call my cup of tea either. Plenty of rain and pretentiousness!

That being said, good on him. If I was the only coach to ever take Seattle to a Superbowl and they were dicking me around while another team was making a very appealing offer, I'd go for it too. Hope Holmegren success in Cleveland.

The BiYear is the accepted unit of measure for retired GM contracts.

They are keenly aware that no coach would last more than 2 years in that town.

That article used way too many words to say that the author thinks Holmgren was the best shot the Hawks had for getting back to the SB and they pooched the punt, or some other football metaphor.

I don't know, it's probably just as easy to spend your time having cybersex with pedophiles there as anywhere.

In reality, everyone secretly wants to go to the Browns just for the possibilities. I mean, whoever's responsible for the Browns finally winning a Super Bowl will become an idol in Ohio, probably immortalized with some kind of statue. At the same time, the team and city have become so used to losing that, were Holmgren to fail as a GM, he'd simply be forgotten as soon as someone else was hired. If you think about it, being the GM for the Browns, there's no real way you can lose.

You say this like being an idol in Ohio would mean something to someone.

I would choose to live in Cleveland before Seattle any day of the week personally.

Seattle wasn't that awesome when I lived out there. Too many smug pricks. A lot of really nice scenery, weather, and plenty to do, but the people drove me craaazy.

Holmgren was my high school football coach (Oak Grove, SJ, 81-84)

I would put a snarky comment here about how he was all about money or something, but I honestly never knew him that well, he was just Coach Holmgren.

I think it would interesting if they hired Marty Morhinwheg as an assistant - since he was our starting QB at the time.

2009-12-21 05:13:22 PM
I think the thing is that Holmgren wanted it in his contract that he could fire the coach and replace him with himself if he wanted to. Not many teams that aren't desperate would want that situation: every week--is Holmgren coming back?

Well if you weren't so damn inferior, we wouldn't be so smug about it.

Really? It doesn't rain a lot there? You must live in super magic Seattle that no one else has ever experienced.

Once was there for a week and the sun was out for maybe an hour in that entire time. No thanks.

Seattle annual rainfall: 36 inches
Cleveland annual rainfall: 36.6 inches
New York annual rainfall: 45 inches
Miami annual rainfall: 60 inches

Try again chief.

I've been there for probably about 3 months combined over several trips. It was sunny for maybe half that time. (counting it as days, obviously nights don't count)

It's not that bad.

But I'd prefer not to live there...still beats living anywhere in Ohio (which I have also spent a few weeks in).

Grew up in SF. Spent 4 years in Cleveland (The Velvet Tango Room, baby). Cleveland and it's people are really decent folk. The difference between Cleveland and Seattle for me is this: Seattle (San Francisco's pretentious low class sibling whore to the north) has it really good and yet can still manage to be pretty farking miserable. When you are between two of the greatest cities on earth, San Francisco and Vancouver, there's naught left to do but pout and where flannels. The rain doesn't make one bit of difference to me....It's your attitude. It generally sucks.

Cleveland on the other hand has been beat for 40 years.....steel industry, Lake Erie on fire, car industry, manufacturing.... You can see it in their eyes. And yet, they are as welcoming and hopeful as ever. Generally pretty dismissive of criticism, and I was always grateful for the copious amounts of hospitality and pleasantness. I love Cleveland, and I love Ohio. It was a great place to grow and experience. I'm back in San Francisco now....But I will never forget you, Cleveland.
