And I mean really, really worth seeing. All I've really WANTED to see this year has been Star Trek, District 9, Inglorious Basterds, and probably Sherlock Holmes, and all I've ACTUALLY cared enough to stir myself and go see was Star Trek.

Is this another Star Wars or Lord of the Rings that you HAVE to go and see because it's epic, or is it what it looks like - a fairly predictable Ferngully remake with prettier graphics? I've always liked Cameron's stuff (even Titanic, ignoring the stupid love story in between the awesome recreation of the sinking), but this film just isn't grabbing me from the previews.

I saw it in an IMAX 3D theatre, it was a fun movie, it was beautiful movie, it was cliche and predictable in many parts still worth it, i'd say, but if you're not falling over yourself to go see it, wait for the crowds to die down.

The biggest problem would be translating idiomatic concepts. In Klingon, you'd have problems finding words for "gratitude" or "affection".

Klingons would probably express gratitude as "the thing/service you gave me was useful". This phrase would rarely be used to describe an "Avatar" DVD.

The Germans, cognizant of the use of both Cherokee and Choctaw by the US in WWI, made an effort to learn at least some of the Native American languages before the US entered WWII. We knew about this effort, of course, and that's why we didn't really use code talkers to any great extent in the European theater.

The Japanese, had they fully exploited the resources they had, could have broken the code used by the Navajo code talkers fairly easily (once you get the syllabary down, it basically a simple substitution code), but they were singularly bad at SIGINT, and they just didn't put the resources into doing it properly.

They probably could have saved a million or so by not inventing a language for this movie. The actors could have been making up words as they went along and I wouldn't have known the difference. The only thing I learned was the word for "moran" and right now I can't even remember that. That's what we should do on fark - start using that word instead of moran...we could even misspell it.

You can make a really good case that the Japanese had no idea what the fark they were getting themselves into by attacking Pearl Harbor. They expected the US to recoil and withdraw from the Pacific, not to tool up and make them our biatches. They just weren't prepared for a real fight from a fully industrialized country of significant resources.

Well, *SOME* Japanese knew better. Certainly, Admiral Yamamoto knew it. The problem is that pride and a large measure of racism stood in the way of recognizing that the sheer size and industrial base of the United States meant that we could win a straight up war of attrition, and that while we might squabble amongst ourselves in peacetime, when you attack us from the outside, you unite us*. Of course, they learned that lesson.

One real interesting part of that war is that for the most part, we were reading their mail. We would land where they didn't expect us, bypassing strongholds and landing where they were weak, and letting the strong garrisons wither on the vine. This went on for several years, but it doesn't seem like the Japanese ever twigged to the fact that their communications were as vulnerable and deeply penetrated as they were.


As for TFA, well, the funny thing will be when the people who learned to speak Klingon call Na'vi speakers losers.

Haven't you noticed the sudden push of Avatar-related links? The astroturf movement to influence a more positive viewpoint on the flick? The insistent need to turn this into the next "Star Wars?"

It's a meh flick with reasonably good CGI. That's pretty much it. As to the link, well...

The domain name is apparently owned by "Sebastian Wolff." According to his blog, he apparently saw the movie on the 18th. The WHOIS entry for the domain, however indicates it was set up early on the 19th. The site's been up for all of two days, and apparently contains a lovely lexicon of Na'vi vocabulary - garnered from a single viewing?

It's astroturf.

Tachikoma: That's not a language. That's just a bunch of words. When you invent a language, you either go all out Tolkien style, or you just make the necessary vocabulary and hope no one notices you half assed the job.

I disagree. It matters less how many words they invented, and matters more whether the mechanics underneath work consistently. Do all the verbs work the same way, and do the phonology rules hold through the language, or does it look like an ADHD five-year-old had a bash on the keyboard?

Also remember that Frommer made patterns for making adjectives out of nouns, and added some complex rules for conjugation involving numbers and tense. So 500 doesn't include "walk" [tìron] and "walked" [tìmìron] as separate words. Looks like you could generate a few thousand practical "words" out of the 500 provided.

In particular, inventing a language where all the verbs get conjugated in the middle [infix inflection, as in tìron above] is a decent feat.

OK, so when does the Na'vi porn start?

Have any of you actually tried figuring any of that stuff out yet?
