"Q" with no "U" sounds like "K".

Airfoilsguy: Chewing on pussy is highly under rated

Or, maybe lowly over rated.

/ But I don't think so.

Obviously the solution is to spend more time masturbating.

When your cruise ship stops to fuel in Yemen, it's a real good idea to decline the invitation to get off to stretch your legs. Especially if you're female.

I heard chewing qat farks with your qi?

tortilla burger: Every dat is Qatarday in Yemen

Every day is Qatarday in Qatar, surely.

2009-12-18 08:31:23 PM
I was really hoping this would be about cats that slowly but unmercifully drain Yemen's water supply, because that is just the sort of thing cats would do.

I am sorely disappointed.

It's illegal here, not entirely sure why; it's a pretty mild high.

Maybe this is a failed and unfunny joke, but, if not, you're just wrong. The Arabic letter qaa is pronounced as a k, but from the deep in the throat rather than the mouth.

The gov't over here in Israel really really wants to ban the thing (drugs are bad etc - as if half the goddamn country isn't on weed) but all the Yemenites won't let it. Oh and a few years back there was an awesome little pill they sold in kiosks around the country that claimed to be qat concentrate that felt like a coke/ecstasy combo and lasted for farking HOURS. They did ban that, though.

My friend (a Yemeni national) had his business compound in Sana'a stormed/looted during a riot a little while back and his bodyguards were powerless to help because they had sold all of their ammo for qat.

/cool story, brah

So I go out and start my car and this guy on NPR says 'Cat chewing', and I'm like huh? He says it a couple more times and there's some kinda arabic dudes speaking in the background. I'm just like what the hell, I got this image of these arabic guys chewing on cats...? Just sat there sorta stunned with the car running and he finally says something about leaves and I get it, but man that was a funny moment.

1) Buy Qat
2) Exchange qat for bodyguards' ammo
3) Loot bodyguards' place of employment
4) Profit

Too tired to work that into the proper format, but yep. Not too shabby a business strategy as far as dealing and robbery strategies go.

misanthropic1: It's illegal here, not entirely sure why; it's a pretty mild high.

It may be a mild high, but overall it's a horribly debilitating habit. I lived in Yemen for three years, and the entire country is essentially paralyzed from their qat habit, which takes precedence over most aspects of society. Also, their agricultural system, which for millennia produced self-sufficiency in grains and vegetables, is now primarily devoted to growing the stuff. Poor Yemeni families (which is, to say, the majority of Yemenis) often spend between 25% and 50+% of their family income on qat.
