WTF...

2009-12-18 04:00:15 PM
This is wrong on soooooo many levels

2009-12-18 04:00:30 PM
How long before he runs for congress?

2009-12-18 04:03:51 PM
That was just creepy.

2009-12-18 04:10:37 PM
My parents had a kid like that. She lived to be 17, just like that. It essentially ruined the parent's lives.

2009-12-18 04:11:25 PM
Damn, I meant my parents' friends. Ugh.

2009-12-18 04:13:33 PM
I'm sorry but what is the point of keeping a child like that alive? If all it has is its brainstem... I just don't think I'd want to live like that. But then I have the ability to think which this baby lacks so...

Just seems like it shouldn't be.

2009-12-18 04:14:08 PM
great, now I have "If I only had a brain" stuck in my head.

if you're a 17 year old girl, then you probably had that right the first time

Yeah, this story is very sad but I just don't understand the point of keeping the baby "alive". There is no brain there. None. Brain dead is legally dead. I also can't help but think the parent is engaged in wishful thinking when she says her baby smiled as though she thinks it was a response to something. With just a brain stem? No. Involuntary muscle movement.

I'd keep a hat on that kid.

So what should they do? Kill him?

Kill? He's already dead in every way that should matter. Always has been. No brain.

But... assuming Wiki is right, it seems i'm wrong about the definition of "brain dead" at least in legal terms. It has to include the inability of involuntary functions to occur without artificial support. The heart can pump on its own, but breathing won't happen without support.

His state is closer to persistent vegetative state and obviously here there is no hope of any sort of recovery. Sadly there'd probably be legal difficulties in ending his "life", such as it is.

Since it wasn't born with a soul, it's okay to put it out of it's misery, right?

2009-12-18 05:30:10 PM
Grow it until you can harvest the organs?

2009-12-18 05:31:44 PM
Nothing new we had someone in my school that also was only born with just a Brain stem.. He was put through the school system sp the parents would have a babysitter.. He had a medic always with him to restart his heart when it stopped.

In that it is illegal?

I'm no right to lifer, but we don't practice euthanasia here. Once we do and it's properly regulated and controlled then I'm all for it.

How would they kill it? Deprive it of nourishment?

Sad that they even put it on life support to begin with, or allowed the pregnancy to continue. I'm making assumptions here, but I'm guessing religion in involved in their decision making. Anyone who would call a clear defect a "miracle" is delusional.

This is one reason why health care costs so much.

At the end of life:
Extending someones life 1 day costs: $1.
1 week: $100
1 year: $100,000,
2 years: $500,000.

Seriously.

I guess I'm cruel and heartless (along with my MedStudent Girlfriend) but we've discussed that if she has a kid that is screened to be braindead or severe disability, it's gone before it gets a chance. It puts a burden on the whole system, families, finances, etc.

Vanetia: I'm sorry but what is the point of keeping a child like that alive? If all it has is its brainstem...

First thought: Let the baby grow until it is large enough to sell of its organs. Not only are you helping others, your child gets to live on as well. Everybody wins.

2009-12-18 05:35:20 PM
This might sound crazy, but what if had the technology to transplat a brain into him?

2009-12-18 05:35:32 PM
A human is more than just a functioning physical body, so there's still a soul kicking around in there whether the rest of us realize it or not.

The experience may be hell visualized from our perspective, but then there are beings who consider just as equally dormant in our perceptive reality.

If he's alive, it's for a reason. Let him live in peace for as long as he needs to.

Vegitative but not on life support.
Apprently he has enough neural cells in his brainstem to keep him alive. Unless you want to break out a shotgun, ending his life isn't simple. There's nothing to unplug.

Does that count as a simulpost? If so, I've officially logged too many hours on Fark.

From the mom: "He's a miracle"

Wow. So your baby without a brain is evidence of god's presence and love?
No wonder you can't argue rationally with these people..

Christ, that's all kinds of messed up. Admittedly, as a kid, I would have thought it morbidly interesting. It's not a person, it's a lump of meat in the shape of one. It's not like someone with severe brain damage, where they can shout "But you never know, they might find a way to make him better someday!" in pointless hope. There's nothing to get better here, unless they're praying for a new brain to grow in.

That kid no more 'laughed' than that tree outside speaks to you when the wind blows. It was probably some autonomous response to something.

It's an obvious and understandable coping mechanism. I can't think of any people who actually want to have a baby that's handicapped in any way.

/Except for those news stories about deaf couples who want to have deaf children.

You have no right to take a baby's life! Life is god's most precious gift, no matter how miserable your existence is.
