We don't like abortions in Muskogee.
We don't like our women bein' free.
Close your legs, you sluts, or have the babies.
'Cause we won't let you have that D&C.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee.
A place where killin' babies ain't allowed.
If you don't like it, go on back to Berkeley
and go cry to your hippie, commie crowd.

FTFA: "The state of Oklahoma legislature passed a law currently that allows an abortion patient's information as to why they chose to have the procedure to posted on the internet, according to NPR News."

Is there any way to add a shiatload of abortions, with the reason being "[insert politician's name who voted for it here] paid me money to not have our secret lovechild, and would be horribly embarrassed if this information were made public"?

Cause that would rock.

...well, with a state that has this pic on their official state webpage, guess one can't expect much class.

it's just a medical procedure that should carry little to no social stigma. I dont see why you wouldn't mind the world knowing about it.

List a reason such as : "I know Billy-Bob can't support no child"

After taking a long survey, the answers given will be posted on a state website after the procedure is done.

Just lie your ass off on the survey if you don't like the law. It won't take all that long for the courts to knock this law down anyhow. Then the rednecks can cry about "activist judges legislating from the bench" and maybe two or three of them will even know what that means.

Why not quit beating about the bush and call it the "dirty, filthy sluts who hate the baby Jesus" list. You know you want to, Republicans.

The problem isn't the "reasons" section... It's the "age", "race", "zip code" section. With those three pieces of data, in a small town, you can figure out exactly who had an abortion, in violation of HIPAA.
Also, why is this a big deal? Because some uber-religious evangelical parents will find out that their precious teenage angel had an abortion, and will kick her out of the house. Because some girl who has an abortion will end up with her picture posted on every telephone pole with a slogan of "baby killer". Because some guy will find out his girlfriend had an abortion, figure she must have been cheating on him, and will kill her. That's why.

All good reasons, but there really is only one reason at all as to why this is complete bullshat.

Doctor-patient confidentiality. Period. End of story. If one wants their data mining, make a poll.

The Stealth Hippopotamus: it's just a medical procedure that should carry little to no social stigma. I dont see why you wouldn't mind the world knowing about it.

It carries little social stigma...so people should be forced to take a survey and have their answers posted on the internet...but since it carries little social stigma they shouldn't care that much about it.

I must say, if you're going to argue that it carries little social stigma, taking the position that required surveys should be posted on the internet is an odd side of the argument.

snuffy: i want to know when are they going to quit funding vasectomies?

I want them to have a mandatory age/race/zipcode vasectomy survey and post the results on the internet. Then we can go to their houses and ask how they can still satisfy their wives, being that they're only half men at that point.

I like the "it was so and so politician's child...he's making me get one" response. I'm sure the doctors performing the procedure aren't too pleased about the law either, so convincing them that the answer is acceptable shouldn't be much trouble.

In other words, more likely than not, none of this is true.

I have the right to kill people who murder babies. Knowing their names will make things much easier.

2009-12-18 06:29:58 PM
The women of Oklahoma should take this bill for what it is - government-issued permission to massively troll anti-abortion nutters, who will have no way of responding! Bwahahaahah!

2009-12-18 06:30:16 PM
I'm pretty far in the "anti-abortion" camp, but this is just stupid, Oklahoma. Way too much room for abuse, invasion of privacy, and just general dickishness on the part of the legislators.

"Because James Inhofe is the father."

Too obvious, you need to be more subtle. There are people who do think just that but I doubt you're one of them.

Calmamity: Why do Republicans hate women and healthy babies?

Because if they're never born, you can't dump them into the foster care system where they'll grow up to be a bunch of thievin', murderin' social deviants. Deviants that deserve nothing less than a hangman's noose, the pummel of a firing squad or a killer cocktail of a doctor's needle.

Basically, Republicans just like them to ripen before they kill 'em.

Seriously. I don't really spend too much time in forums where people spout out their "opinion" that NPR is not a real news source, but instead some sort of government conspiracy lie machine, so this comment came to me as though I was reading the words of a man who has written a manifesto on the walls of his apartment in his own feces.

Is this multiple choice or essay? Can women simply write "None of your farking business" after each question?

And what happens if she won't fill out a survey? Abortion denied? Jail time?

How about a pregnant woman in a car accident? The husband is told that their only chance to save his wife is to abort. Is he then told, "And we'll begin the procedure just as soon as you fill out our oppressively long survey"?

We still have a high percentage of husbands that rape their wives in this state. If you're raping her to impregnate her so she will be forced to stay with you because she can't afford to be on her own if she's knocked up, you definitely don't want abortions to be legal, not to mention when she fills that survey out & she doesn't put that you raped her on there as a reason for the abortion, she'll never be able to claim that you did later. In Oklahoma, many, many, many men still view women as property. Not all. Just many.

While I've not done a whole lot of searching for it, what is the fundamental public interest in collecting this data only for abortions and not for any other medical procedures?

There has to be a reason other than demographic purposes, right?
