Back in my day (adjusts onion belt, knee-high stockings), kids with severe autism were diagnosed as mentally retarded and - more often than not - institutionalized. The functioning autistics were easily spotted in school because they wore tie clips.

After spending time on an software development project related to autism spectrum disorders I've come to the conclusion that there are enough criteria and choices within the criteria that any kid who isn't happy to go play pee-wee football 6 nights a week qualifies.

I propose a new bubble: Mental and psychiatric institutions, some devoted specifically to the autistic. It would provide new jobs for construction workers, doctors, nurses, care givers. Participation would be mandatory for the autistic. If they could function in the real world they could wear special bracelets like people with allergies then people could go "Oh, he's not a freak he's just autistic!". When it bursts in twenty years, well that won't be until twenty years from now!

Health officials have urged stepped-up screening of children for autism, saying early therapy can improve how well children develop. While researchers have found that parents often voiced concerns about a child's development before age 2, the average age of diagnosis is still about 4 1/2.

Yeah, they call that "therapy" good parenting to prevent the "symptoms" in the first place.

Crappy parents are crappy parents, whether or not they use an autism misdiagnosis as a justification for the kid's bad behavior is irrelevant.

I'd like to snag the "cool story, bra" tag while it's still open:

I'm a substitute teacher. One day I had some pretty severely handicapped kids out on the playground. One boy came trotting across to the swings, and tripped over the little border. He looked like he whacked himself pretty good--fell flat on his face, of course, not catching himself like a normal kid would--but he got right up and went and got on the swing. (He didn't talk at all.) When it was time to go in, one of the girls came over and said that he was bleeding. I went and checked, and he did have a little bit of a bloody lip. The other teacher came up then and took him in to clean him up.

Then she comes back, looking all worried, and asks me exactly what happened. I told her, and she said that the kid's whole mouth was full of blood, and he'd knocked out two teeth, and apparently swallowed them. We checked where he'd fallen down--no blood, no teeth, and the kid, naturally, had nothing to say about the incident.

His parents came and got him. I kept my job (and what a job it is, sigh). But I had to fill out an accident report and I felt vaguely guilty about the whole thing, even though no one had seen me lose it and belt the kid.

Just kidding about that last part.

There was a British study a while back that did their own diagnosing... they saw the same rates of autism in youngsters and old people.

That suggests that recent rises in the rate are mostly or entirely from more diagnosis.

Well we beat kids much less today than in the past. Autism cases are increasing more than in the past.

Ok, well according to BOTH posters I'm apparently at some degree in the spectrum. Guess I'm screwed no matter how I look at it.

My wife fits in there too - AND our kids have been vaccinated! Crap, might as well just call DCFS and have me locked up for endangerment right now.

However, only 21% of the former are atheists but this gives the majority of excuses to lazy parents who hide their children under 'blanket' diagnoses in order to absolve themselves from responsibility and to hide the fact that the parents relish the taste of their snot at the traffic light. These mothers are agnostics because they're too lazy to agree on which god is believable or not. Asperger's parents usually drive the speed limit or less in the passing lane. This is a common side effect of autism or any of its spectrum disorders like Tourette's and AIDS.

I have an autistic (right on the line between "moderate" and "severe") 3-year-old, who essentially can't be communicated with.

We've made a bit of progress with picture cards and such, but she's still immune to threats and bribes. She's undersensitive, so she has a pretty high pain threshold, so even smacks don't work. I've yet to try beating her till she's black and blue when she drinks from the toilet (or whatever), I'm reluctant to try that. So I just keep her locked out of the bathroom.

I disagree. I've seen some of these autistic kids and they just aren't right. Retarded is the word that comes into my limited brain. In no sense of the word could they be called normal. Dyslexics seem pretty normal on the surface to me.

Sin_City_Superhero: I remember when I was growing up there were no austic kids. Instead of being diagnosed with autism or ADHD they were diagnosed as having douchebagitis. The treatment for douchebagitis was a swift kick in the pants.

There is a wide range to human interaction and personalities and such.

Some of this may overlap into areas of neurological developmental disorders that can be classified and treated.

Autism involves sitting in the corner banging your head into a wall while crafting your poop into a perfect sphere. This is a health problem and should be diagnosed and treated as best as possible.

Taking away other kids toys and not listening to your parents. This is called being a child and can be treated with parenting.

But honestly, I think we need to stop calling any sort of social or behavior problems autism and start coming up with new names. People with true autism cannot function in society at all, plain and simple.
