pfffffffft... when i was in russia my grandma could type faster than that..
ofcourse this was in the 1930s and back then we used to have apples as the medicine of the time. I remember one time, Granny, we called her Granny cause she was our grandmother, anyways, she took an apple and gave it to Billy the Mascot. Now Billy was about to run a 100 mile race with bunch of the paraplegic guys down the road which if you think about it these days thats not acceptable. But back then all we had to do was wrap them to a tier and they would roll down the hill all the way into the lake.

In 9th grade, my school had gotten the very first Macs (1984), and a few friends and I kicked ass on Typing Invaders. Even under those artificial and ideal conditions (getting used to a particular set of words), probably never got over 80 wpm.

Wonder if she'd do even better on Dvorak?

And wonder what kind of career this will prepare her for...

I could type pretty fast by that age too.

In college I learned how to type one handed... not 119 words a minute, but faster than more than 50% of adults I've ever met.

Among teenagers today, that's not that fast. I know at least a dozen guys (and they are in fact all dudes, dunno why) who can beat that.

Fast for a fifth grader, but not newsworthily so.

My typing really took off when I started chatting about politics and the environment. It's amazing how fast you can type when people are describing stuff that is totally FALSE.

When I was in the Army, during slow times with no targets up, we would sometimes time how fast we could type either "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog", or "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country"*. I don't know how fast we were.

A quick check shows I can still do the latter sentence in 8 seconds, on a crappy laptop keyboard, which works out to a little over 100 WPM.

Of course, that's for a fixed phrase that I warmed up a few times with.

*Yes, I know the original quote is "party".
