The costs of medical procedures in the US are taking on a 'streetvalue' streak of absurdity: forty-thousand dollars for something that takes two hours ? I don't care what kind of equipment you use or how many people you line up around the operating table - there's just no way that that translates.

Good luck squeezing blood out of a turnip. These idiots actually think suing will do anything?

The guy will go to jail, and the patients will get nothing. The wife will probably make out okay but she better get that divorce finalized fast.

Marshal Samuel Gerard: Listen up, ladies and gentlemen. Our fugitive has been on the run for ninety minutes. Average foot speed over uneven ground barring injuries is 4 miles an hour and that gives us a radius of six miles. What I want out of each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area. Checkpoints go up at fifteen miles. Your fugitive's name is Dr. Mark Weinberger. Go get him.

County Sheriff: Only one person in a million could survive that fall. The guy is fish food.
Marshal Samuel Gerard: OK, get a cane pole. Go catch the fish that ate him.

This describes about 1/4 of the clinics where I live. The swanky money making operations are everywhere. They charge people for work they didn't need or didn't ask for. I'm sure there is something in the professional trade publications telling doctors how to become millionaires by opening up one of these luxury practices.

After having a CT scan suggested when I needed a hay fever med refill and some snake oil style vision restoration contact lenses pushed by an eye doctor I avoid any clinic that looks like a 4 star hotel inside.

Relatives of former patients said the arrest might bring an end to the saga. Peggy Hood, the sister of 50-year-old Phyllis Barnes of Valparaiso, Ind., said Weinberger treated her sister for sinus problems but failed to discover advanced throat cancer, and the delay cost Barnes her life.

you don't go to a plastic surgeon for health advice... this one is actually your sister's fault for being so conceided that she didn't notice she had cancer in her throathole.

I also like where it said that the number of cases has grown since he left... which I read as "once people started hearing that a few of the patients were suing him, everyone started lining up for their paycheck with fantastic stories."

/The doctor is still a total douche

The man was in a tent in the alps and still got caught. No matter how remote the spot, there is going to be some douchey granola/veggie burrito eating mountain guide that will rat you out.

Aside from the fact that he shouldn't select bright yellow as his tent color, the remote fugitive takes huge risks everytime he makes a supply run. Simply going into a small town becomes highly suspect to store owners who know everyone in the area. Then there's hunters, park rangers, hikers, etc that will take great interest in anything slightly different. No, better to hide in plain site.

A large city offers better camoflauge then a remote setting. First, change your appearance, haircut/facial hair, your style of dress (should become poor/humble), and wear sunglasses and hats anytime you go out in public. Select a poor ethinc neighborhood in the vicinity of a large city. Go to ground for as long as your stash will allow, switching cities every six months. Be sure to select cities distant from the place where you committed the crime.

Once your nut runs out, it's outlaw time. You are going to have to commit crimes to have money. Put a crew together. Meet low-lifes at miserable dive bars and pull off break-ins and robberies until you've nutted up enough to jet again. Rinse. Repeat.

The life of a fugitive ain't pretty, but it beats the alternative.

His patients thought he was a good doctor because he had a posh clinic? All lawsuits should be dismissed. They got what they deserved. They were ripped off fair and square. Ignorant, conceited rich people stealing from ignorant, conceited rich people? This is like drug dealing pimps shooting each other. Let'em go at it.

serious question, how do you find a *good* doctor? I'm only two and a half for four for docs that I've visited in the past year.

Surgeon - didn't like him at first. Very brusque and arrogant. Turned out to be awesome. (I can totally understand; I've been accused of having a touch of the assburgers myself.)

ENT - total quack. Had no idea what I went to see him for, diagnosed as gastric reflux, and to top it off fraudulently billed my insurance company for "surgery" when all he did was scope my throat.

GP - meh. I like her but the office she works out of is kind of ghetto. She's overbooked as well, but I gather that's typical.

Dentist - good, but expensive, and doesn't take any insurance at all. Will fill out forms for me. One thing I don't like is that every time I go there's a suggestion for having more stuff done - yeah, my teeth are a little crooked and not refrigerator white, and I have a couple old metal fillings, so what?

Seriously, it's hard - I live in such an overpopulated area that for anything I might need there's about 100 docs specializing in just that thing, so typically I just go to whoever the GP recommends. (And there's about a million of those, so I went to the one the girl was seeing.)
