Apparently there aren't any marines on board. Adapt and overcome. Like, I dunno, release a net under the water to tangle their prop or something. They adapt, you adapt.

I'm just thankful the Steve Irwin boat's helicopter, the Steve Irwin Helicopter, was able to safely return to the Steve Irwin boat.

piracy is piracy. attacking and attempting to (and according to themselves succeeding in) sinking ships is illegal. i hope the japanese sink their ship and let that no good, p.o.s captain go down with his ship.

I've always wondered why some whaling group has not blown these farkers up yet. I mean surely there are few mercenary groups that would take that job. Couple of pounds of dynamite and no more Sea Shepard.

Is this the thread where we're supposed to talk about how killing animals is awesome and animal rights people are all stupid crazy hippies, then post pictures of cats being lit on fire and laugh about the time we ran about a dog and then call anyone who complains about that a pathetic bleeding heart loser?

I can see killing some whales for research. I dunno, maybe 10 a year. The Japanese are apparently killing around 1000 or so.

However, the Sea Sheperd crew is harrassing the crap out of the Japanese fleet, and are shocked...SHOCKED...when the Japanese ships do anything against them.

They're having a hard time selling the meat too. They're pushing it on school lunch programs in Japan and meanwhile, the stuff is chock full of heavy metals and contaminants like PCBs and dioxins because whales are high on the food chain. The stuff is toxic waste. Better off eating young animals that are low on the chain like salmon.

I saw a documentary on the Sea Shepherd Society a long time ago. As I watched, I thought it was pretty ballsy for them to enforce international whaling treaties when nobody else would.

For awhile, I had the thought in my head that I'd put out some inquiries about joining the crew (I was still young and more adventurous than now). Fortunately, I watched the rest of the show in which the crewmembers were interviewed. To the last one, it was all Celestial Moon Dolphin Wisdom and Rainbows crap. If I had to listen to that for months on end at sea trapped on a ship, I'd end up keel-hauling someone.

redundant captain is redundant

/also, leave the Japanese alone. or else they'll release their giant robot army. (sort of joking)

He pretended to be shot, yes. I saw the episode. The piece of metal he came up with was clearly not a bullet, and its origin is dubious. I think it was complete BS.

As bad as the Japanese whaling fleets are, the fact that Discovery Channel provides funding for these pirates is utterly disgusting. The "Sea Shepherds" should face the same consequences as any other pirates found at sea (enclose them in an iron cage, and hang them until their flesh rots off).

I had been wondering how long it would be before the Japanese tasked some kind of vessel to provide escort and security for their whalers. But they really ought to make a courtesy call on the French, if protocol in fact requires that. Watson is so full of shiat though, that I would reflexively doubt that assertion.
And yes, IRONY tag ought to be employed.

I'm not much for killing whales at all but I'm really, really wanting to taste one whenever these stories come along. Anyone ever eat some whale? Can you get whale meat on some blackmarket in the US or do you have to go to Japan?

fark whalers. This isn't a PETA stunt or people handcuffing themselves to their favorite oak; whales are endangered and intelligent creatures. I'm not saying they should have the rights of humans, but killing a cetean (or ape) when unneeded is bad and not the same as killing a cow. The Japanese are killing unsustainable numbers; I'm not choked up about giving them a hard time.

2009-12-17 11:50:47 PM
The problem is that the Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. But they put in a loophole that allows each whaling nation to whale for research AND set the level of whaling. And of course, to make sure that the whale isn't wasted for just research, they can sell the meat on the market. How convenient.

I know Fark is the home of everything anti-animal lover (except Caturdays), but why all the hate for Sea Shepards? The Japanese are engaging in illegal whaling. No one is doing anything about it beyond a "strongly worded letter". So why not harass them and bring attention to what is going on?

Besides, it's great television. :-0

We're whalers on the moon.
We carry a harpoon.
But there aren't no whales.
So we tell tall tales.
And sing our whaling tune.

Sorry, but that area is international water as far as shipping goes. As long as the japanese boat does not start fishing or whaling in the french waters while it is trailing the Greenpeace boat, it is perfectly legal.

2009-12-17 11:53:50 PM
So the only actual crimes involved so far are a minor trespass into territorial waters and unauthorized approach to a boat with a helicopter?

Meh.

Very salty, fishy, and smells like shiat; in other words, kind of like subby's mom. Don't try it, you'll regret it for days, if not weeks afterwards.

Stonerbloopers: Didn't Paul Watson get shot by somebody on one of those Japanese ships a few years ago?

While wearing his bullet proof vest, and his "whale police officer badge" Captain Watson was on the bridge wing when he stumbled back and into bridge. He then reached in under his bullet proof vest and pulled out the badge which was bent and had a round in it.

The expended round was not a rifle round, but a handgun round and he surmised that he had been shot by what must have been Japanese Coast Guard sharp-shootes who he assumed were onboard.

You can imagine how my co-workers and I rip this guy and his crew apart around the watercooler.

It was pretty rank and greasy the one time I had whale steak, and as someone pointed out evidently the Japanese don't really think any better of it.

I think it's some sort of weird "they told us we can't, so we *must* do it to maintain national pride!" thing.
