Listen, it's probably a slow news day in Petoskey (like every day). Something vaguely exciting happens and the local reporters go hunting for any piece of news they can find.

You can only do cat fashion shows for so long before you need a nice homicide or suicide to break things up a bit.

That guy is full of winning quotes.

"These are always tragic," he said. "We never have all the answers - we never have enough answers."

Because they're dead? Could that be why?

/Mackinac Bridge is scary.

Like the news story I submitted yesterday, maybe an autopsy will help determine the cause of her death. That Romero sure gets around.

If network television has taught me anything, the number one cause of suicide is either someone trying to get the insurance money to pay off a bookie so their family gets saved, or someone being forced to become suicide attackers again, so their family won't be killed.

Are you calling network television a liar, mr detective?

Two blondes were in a bar watching the television when the news came on. It showed a guy on a bridge that was about to jump, obviously suicidal. "I'll bet you $10 he'll jump," said Betty.

"Bet you $10 he won't," replied Amber. Then, the guy on the television closed his eyes and threw himself off the bridge. The second blonde hands the first her money.

"I can't take your money," said Betty. "I cheated you. The same story was on the five o'clock news."

"No, no. Take it," said Amber. "I saw the five o'clock news too. I just didn't think the guy was dumb enough to jump again!"

Where's the Brady Campaign clamoring to ban bridges after this one?

Oh, that's right. Banning an inanimate object because it's used for suicide is only smart when it's a gun.

GWShenlong05: Or that she lived in the state of Michigan. Poe-tay-toe, puh-tah-toe.

This is a pretty decent point. Being a former Michigander myself, I can attest to the fact that Michigan is a pretty depressing state, and I knew half a dozen or so people that have committed or tried to commit suicide while living there.

I personally moved to Colorado to get away from the entire aura of that place, and I'm dreading visiting my parents starting next week. I am never going back there, even if I am offered a good job; I will ask if I can telecommute.

/The view from Mackinac Bridge must have been amazing when she jumped, though.
//Srsly, it's a beautiful view, so it was probably the highest, prettiest place she could have jumped from.

Another way to commit suicide on the bridge, drive a Yugo over it:

In 1989, 31-year-old Leslie Ann Pluhar, driving a 1987 Yugo over the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan, was blown over the bridge's 36-inch (910 mm) railing by a 50 mph (80 km/h) gust of wind. The incident was widely publicized, with the make of car prominently identified. Mackinac Bridge Authority's chief engineer estimated that the car was exceeding the 45 mph (72 km/h) speed limit enforced on the bridge, though it was later discovered that Pluhar, concerned that the high wind could put her in danger, stopped the car. The act of stopping the car denied it of the downforce generated by forward motion, this, combined with the unusually low railings that afforded no protection to cars traveling on the bridge contributed to the light weight Yugo being blown off the bridge.[9][10]

I moved to Colorado and lived in Boulder for 11 years before moving back to the UP 8 years ago. So far, much happier in da UP.

But you don't say where you're from. If you're comparing the Troll Lands to Colorado, yeah, stay in Colorado. But Michigan is not all Detroit. It's not depressing at all to live in the UP. But I wouldn't live below the bridge no matter how much you pay me.

//would live in a trailer in Gwinn before moving away from the UP.

The only way this would interest me is if the water under the bridge was frozen. Not only would the goo that was her body be stuck to the ice but that red stain ain't going anywhere 'til it thaws.

Yes, but it is followed closely by bewilderment. And then skepticism.

"The Bridge" is an awesome documentary about jumpers on the Golden Gate Bridge. It is not preachy or a moral story. The story ends up being a story about life.

Sexton would disagree with you, if she hadn't finally "succeeded."
