iirc nebraska gets minor earthquakes fairly frequently because it sits on top of a gigantic (but relatively stable) fault line.

Maybe a meteor -

From Spaceweather.com:

"Last night, Dec. 16th at 9 p.m. CST, a very bright meteor lit up the completely overcast sky like lightning in southeast Nebraska," reports Trooper Jerry Chab of the Nebraska State Patrol. "It flashed for approximately 2 seconds and was followed by sonic booms and ground shaking, which prompted many calls by the public to law enforcement in a three county wide area." Meanwhile, the USGS says there was a magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Auburn, Nebraska, at 8:53 pm, about the same time and place as the fireball. This map shows the nominal epicenter:

police investigated the crash but only found a smoldering pit on the old Kent farm. they congratulated the old farmers on their new baby and called it a night.

FTFA : The quake was felt by people in several nearby Nebraska towns, including Peru, Nebraska City, and Dunbar. It also was felt across the Missouri River in Hamburg, Iowa; and Rock Port, Mo.

So the quake was felt by Hamburgers? Weird.

I'm calling shenanigans on the meteor theory. I think a meteor big enough to cause a 3.5 earthquake would have left a HUGE crater somewhere.

Wait, am I really the first smug Californian to the thread? It falls to me to point out that a 3.5 is about as significant as a kitten farting in the next room? I have to be the one to say that literally no one would even notice an earthquake that size around here?

Nope, not going to do it. That would make me an asshole. I'm totally not saying that.

thomps: iirc nebraska gets minor earthquakes fairly frequently because it sits on top of a gigantic (but relatively stable) fault line.

Depends on what you mean by "frequently" I guess.

The largest recorded earthquake in the state's history occurred March 28, 1964, when a magnitude 5.1 quake struck near Merriman, in Cherry County.

A lesser quake, one of similar magnitude to Wednesday's, took place about 20 miles northeast of Auburn, in Fremont County, Iowa, in July 2004.

Wednesday's quake could be felt as far away as northwest Missouri and southwest Iowa and throughout much of southeast Nebraska.

According to the USGS, the first significant earthquake recorded in Nebraska was on April 24, 1867. Since then, at least seven earthquakes have originated in the state and several quakes in neighboring states have been felt in Nebraska.
^

I'd call that "rarely" but then I'm not a dirty midwesterner.

I think all of the rest of the smug Californians realize that a fireball from-the-sky accompaniment kinda trumps your Richter number hard-ons.

Personally, I think God was trying to smite Warren Buffet for his dealings with Wells Fargo and Citibank.

In another report (at the bottom of article, new window), someone was so frightened that they said they'd move out of Nebraska if there was another quake! The highest reported MMI (new window) was only 4:

"Felt indoors by many, outdoors by few during the day. At night, some awakened. Dishes, windows, doors disturbed; walls make cracking sound. Sensation like heavy truck striking building. Standing motor cars rocked noticeably."

Sorry, but I've experienced many thunderstorms worse than that. Unless things actually start falling over and/or breaking, I'm just going to think "Cool, an earthquake!"

A 3.5 is news? Those happen like every five minutes in California. I'm pretty sure the locals don't even notice, it's like a truck going by on the street in front of your house.

The biggest recorded was a 5.1? Damn son, a 5.1 is almost big enough to scare your cats.

Not quite that frequently, but we've had 3 earthquakes this week so far in that size range. Not a mention of any of them in the media that I saw.

A 3.5? Probably someone dropped their watch and NOAA operators needed something to relieve the boredom. This is Nebraska, right?
